BBC: All the restaurants in Remarkable Places to Eat

If you saw the first episode of Remarkable Places to Eat (Wednesday, July 17th), you will have finished the episode with a dose of wanderlust and a rumbling stomach.

The new foodie series kicked off on BBC Two on Wednesday, July 17th and sees First Dates’ maitre d’ Fred Sirieix travel around European with renowned chefs, finding the best spots to eat in.

So where did they go in the first episode and where are they heading next?

Where did Fred go in the first episode?

In the first episode of Remarkable Places to Eat, Fred journeys to Venice alongside chef and restauranteur Angela Hartnett.

Angela has Italian heritage and is known for being a master of Italian cuisine. She owns and is the head chef at central London Italian restaurant, Murano. So, she’s a pretty good guide to the city and clearly shows Fred the best that Venice has to offer.

First they venture to Osteria alle Testiere, a traditional Venetian seafood restaurant that sits just 22 people at a time.

This restaurant was opened by Luca de Vita and Bruno Gavangnin, two greats who show Fred and Angela how they operate behind the scenes at Osteria, picking out the best produce of the day at the market to change the menu daily.

Viewers were so blown away – and keen to find out how to go there themselves – that their website crashed!

The most expensive coffee in Europe?

Next up, Fred and Angela hit the famed St Mark’s Square.

This area is surrounded by designer clothing boutiques and expensive shops, but none come close to the restaurants and cafés that lie within the square.

Angela and Fred visit the historic Caffé Florian, one of the most iconic coffee spots in the world. In fact, it’s the oldest café in the world, having opened in 1720!

If you’re planning to visit Caffé Florian then be prepared to spend big… two cakes and two coffees cost them €58!

Burano: The fisherman’s island

Angela decided to take Fred to the small fisherman’s island just off the main island of Venice called Burano. Here she explains she found the perfect risotto, one that could even beat hers in flavour.

In the episode she takes him to a family run restaurant called Trattoria al Gatto Nero.

This spot is legendary with locals, having the freshest and most delicious Venetian food around.

In 1965 it was taken over by Ruggero Bovo who elevated the status of the place from local inn to popular restaurant. He now runs the place with his son.
