Court told shocking claims about Julia Wandelt as her trial for stalking the McCanns begins

Julia Wandelt, who previously went viral after claiming she might be missing girl Madeleine McCann, is currently on trial over claims she stalked Kate and Gerry McCann. Julia has denied the claims against her.

A court has heard that Julia allegedly sent unwanted emails, made multiple phone calls and even turned up at the home of the McCanns. Wandelt has been accused alongside 61-year-old Karen Spragg. They both deny stalking and causing serious distress to Kate and Gerry, between June 2022 and February this year.

Previously, Wandelt set up an Instagram page for sharing her “evidence” that she could be Madeleine McCann. On there, she posted about physical attributes she and Madeleine share, and childhood memories of being on holiday somewhere similar to Praia Da Luz, where Madeleine was last seen.

But, DNA results said Wandelt is not Madeleine. She has since been accused of stalking the McCann family. Jurors at the trial were told Wandelt tried to persuade “anybody prepared to listen” that she is Maddie, who disappeared in May 2007.

Prosecutor Michael Duck KC said: “You will hear unequivocal scientific evidence in this case that Madeleine McCann is the natural daughter of Kate and Gerry McCann. Julia Wandelt has no familial link to them.

“There could never have been a legitimate belief by Julia Wandelt that she was Madeleine McCann. At the time of Madeleine McCann’s disappearance, Julia Wandelt was not of the same age.” Julia is said to have cried in court when it was said she isn’t Madeleine McCann.

The court was shown evidence of when Julia had compared pictures of herself to Madeleine, and was told she had tried to convince younger McCann sibling Amelie that they were related.

The prosector added it was all “conspiracy theory” and a “well-planned campaign of harassment”. This included Wandelt contacting police to find out information about the Madeleine investigation. She is also accused of phoning a hospital switchboard, to tell them she is Madeleine McCann.

She is said to have messaged Gerry McCann: “In June 2022 I started to think maybe I am Madeleine McCann. I am not joking, please take this seriously.” As well as this, jurors were told she messaged Kate McCann over 60 times during in just one day, and said: “I never lied. I am not crazy. Please let me prove it.”

One voicemail said: “I beg you, you are my real mother, I remember you and our home, give me a chance to prove it. You are mummy. You know it’s me. I remember how you hugged me and a pink teddy bear.”  In one email sent to Gerry, Wandelt wrote: “I could be your daughter, it’s possible I’m her.”

The trial continues, and is expected to last around five weeks.
