Sydney Sweeney blames ‘girls’ for the bathwater soap backlash, and people aren’t having it
It’s getting messy
Sydney Sweeney has been in one controversy to the next for the past few months. Back in June, she released bars of soap with Dr. Squatch that were apparently made with her bathwater.
The Euphoria actress had starred in multiple controversial campaigns with the brand before this. Her “Dirty Little Boys” ad went viral on X and TikTok, and people didn’t know how to feel. Some thought the ads were cringy and giving “pick me” girl energy while others thought it was smart for Sydney to collaborate with a men’s grooming brand, as most of her followers are men.
But things really kicked off after the bathwater soap incident. It sold out in literal seconds and was listed on eBay for wild resale prices of up to $2,000. She spoke about the backlash in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.
“It was mainly the girls making complaints. Which I thought was really interesting,” Sydney said.
“They all loved the idea of Jacob Elordi’s bathwater,” she added, referencing that one scene in Saltburn.
This immediately didn’t sit right with many people online. Sydney Sweeney’s past criticisms of not being a “girl’s girl” and pandering to men all came back up.
“Not her trying to switch this on other women when her whole existence is so male centered,” said one X post with over 20k likes.
“I promise you no woman wants to bathe with a soap called ‘Jacob Elordi’s bathwater’, that’s the type of weird marketing that only works on men,” said another, with 30k likes.

But she doesn’t seem to regret her appearance in the advert at all. In the interview with Wall Street Journal, she said she was thinking strategically. Dr. Squatch has just been acquired for $1.5 billion, but Sydney declined to comment on whether she had stakes in the company.
Sydney’s latest drama was her American Eagles advert. The slogan “Sydney Sweeney has good jeans” was offensive to a lot of people. They thought the double meaning of the word “jeans” was referencing her blonde hair and blue eyes, and could be interpreted as a white supremacist dog whistle. She didn’t respond to the American Eagle backlash at all in her newest interview.
