University of Exeter student wins national Student Social Mobility Award
He showed ‘what’s possible when potential is given a chance’
A University of Exeter student has won a national Student Social Mobility Award.
A third-year student Zach Islam was one of three winners recognised for their academic success at university, “breaking through barriers in the process” of what they achieved.
The Student Mobility Awards are designed “to recognise students who have excelled in their studies and beyond”, something which Zach has undoubtedly done.
Zach’s time at university not only involved a student on track for a first-class degree, but also commitments outside of his academic work, which show the qualities of a dedicated student.
As president of the Asian Society, he was a part of the Diwali celebrations which featured on ITV news. However, Zach also advocate for different communities as well.
His role in Employability and Equality, and Diversity committees, enabled him to work towards change by being involved in policymaking. Not only is he a role model in his personal achievements, but also someone who created opportunities for others.
The Student Mobility Awards focus specifically on “the incredible achievements of undergraduates from lower socio-economic backgrounds from across the UK.” This shows the importance of the award, as it recognises the challenges that have been faced in what is accomplished and merits the students hard work to succeed despite the “barriers” that may have been in the way.
Zach received free school meals and was the first in his family to go to university. Although Exeter was not his first or second choice, and his education journey has been, “anything but straightforward”, he has really made the most of his time at the institution.

The human sciences with proficiency in law student’s involvement in university life resulted in him being the 2024 ‘student of the year’. A reward which meant a huge amount to Zach.
Zach told Exeter News: “It’s a moment of deep pride – not just for myself, but for everyone who’s walked a similar path. From growing up in Luton, attending one of the UK’s lowest-performing schools, to now walking into J.P Morgan’s Canary Wharf office, it’s a full-circle moment that shows what’s possible when potential is given a chance.”
From academics to university co-curricular, and beyond, such as Zach’s investment banking internship at J.P Morgan. He is a living example of, in his own words: “What’s possible when potential is given a chance”. He has shown what there is to achieve and has taken it in full force.
Now he is an inspiration to those around him not only in the opportunities that his actions have provided, but also in giving confidence to students from similar backgrounds that aim to achieve lots in their futures.
After all Zach has achieved in his time at the University of Exeter and before, he is undoubtably a worthy winner of such an amazing award.
