University of Bristol to open first-ever international campus in Mumbai

The University of Bristol has announced plans to open its first-ever international campus in Mumbai in 2026, marking a major milestone in its 150-year history

The University of Bristol has made history this week with the announcement of its first international campus in Mumbai, India, with doors set to open in summer 2026.

The new Mumbai Enterprise Campus will be a huge move for the university, which is also about to celebrate its 150th anniversary and open the brand-new Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus in Bristol next year.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Evelyn Welch said the project represents a “pivotal transformation” for the university, helping Bristol strengthen its global reach and ambition to be a top 50 university worldwide.

“We’re delighted to announce our intention to create a new campus in Mumbai,” she said.

“This development reflects our commitment to building a globally inclusive future, working in close partnership with our international communities.”

Professor Evelyn Welch, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Bristol, shakes hands with Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, India’s Minister of Education.

The Mumbai campus will mirror the entrepreneurial ecosystem planned for Temple Quarter, bringing together students, academics, industry and the local community. Undergraduate and postgraduate degrees will initially focus on Bristol’s global strengths: data science, AI, economics, fintech, immersive arts, business and management, with plans to expand over time.

Students will also benefit from the university’s Think Big scholarships, and graduates will gain internationally recognised qualifications that open doors to careers around the world.

The plans were officially signed off by the Indian government at an event in New Delhi celebrating the country’s National Education Policy 2020, a framework that’s transforming higher education across India.

Professor Michele Acuto, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Global Engagement, said:

“This isn’t just about building a campus – it’s about connecting with Mumbai’s energy and innovation to create a truly global learning hub. We’ll be working closely with our partners in India to deliver something exceptional from day one.”

Bristol was recently ranked 51st in the world (QS World University Rankings 2026), and the Mumbai project follows the university’s launch of the UK’s most powerful supercomputer earlier this month.

Christina Scott, Acting British High Commissioner to India, added:

“This is fantastic news for UK-India collaboration. Students will now be able to access world-class UK education right here in India, opening new opportunities for the next generation of global talent.”
