Inside International Cruise Victims, the organisation raising awareness of marine crimes

Members look into deaths, disappearances, and sexual crimes

International Cruise Victims is an organisation which aims to support those who have experienced marine crimes.

As shown by its name, the main focus of the group are incidents which have happened aboard cruise ships, with its slogan being “victims helping victims”.

And with the popularity of Netflix’s Amy Bradley is Missing, tragic events occurring on cruises has been at the forefront of people’s minds.

But what actually is International Cruise Victims, and what does the organisation do?

It pushes for marine regulation changes

One of the predominant focuses of International Cruise Victims is to change marine regulations.

It says it does this with the aim of ensuring the safety of cruise ship passengers.

Many of the members have also spoken at Congressional hearings, including one at which looked into the challenges of passenger vessel safety.

Furthermore, the group also signposts potential victims and families to the correct law enforcement and government bodies, for example, the FBI.

Website visitors are also recommended to look at Cruise Law News, a page created by marine lawyers which looks into recent cases relating to passenger vessels and other types of boats.

International Cruise Victims works to raise awareness and share victims’ stories

As part of its work to raise awareness, International Cruise Victims works to educate passenger ship users.

On its site, it has a section called “Don’t Snooze Before You Cruise” outlining what to do if a family member goes missing on board, how to seek medical help, how to understand your on-board Bill of Rights, and more. In this section, it also notes that sexual assault is the most common crime on cruise ships, with one third of these crimes being committed against minors.

As well as this, the organisation has a section on its website where it raises awareness of victims’ stories. The stories of these people include murder, sexual assault, disappearances, injuries, and overboard incidents.

These stories are told by victims and/or their family members. Famous examples include Amy Bradley, Dianne Brimble, and Ashley Barnett.

The organisation is also hoping to start a podcast soon which will look through cases.
