Exeter Uni Sailing Club raises £58k to make sailing more accessible for students

‘We can welcome even more beginners and ensure no student is turned away’

Exeter University Sailing Club has just raised an impressive £58,000 to make sailing more accessible to students.

With both fundraising efforts and winning £12,380 from the National Lottery, the club has raised a substantial sum to fund the expansion of its Let’s Go Sailing programme.

This initiative is designed to help more beginners and students, especially those from low-income or underrepresented backgrounds, get involved in the sport.

Sailing is often viewed as a sport with high entry barriers, primarily due to the costs of equipment, transportation, and training. This funding will help beginners overcome these obstacles, opening up the sport to a much wider group of students.

The Let’s Go Sailing initiative began back in 2019 and has since encouraged more than 1,200 people to begin sailing. However, with demand for beginner sessions constantly exceeding the club’s capacity, raising this money is essential to accommodate growing the demand.

With this funding, the club will be able to provide more boats, equipment, transport, and coaching, ensuring more students than ever can take part.

The money will support the programme for at least three more years and create many more opportunities for those who may not have had access to the sport otherwise.

EUSC’s secretary told DevonLive: “This funding is a game-changer for us. We are committed to making sailing more accessible and inclusive. By expanding our fleet, we can welcome even more beginners and ensure no student is turned away due to lack of resources.”

For EUSC, this is a major step forward as they grow their reputation as one of the UK’s most high-achieving, inclusive, and accessible student sports club, as well as the UK’s most successful university sailing club.

They also plan to offer training that leads to Royal Yachting Association qualifications, giving students the chance to stay involved in sailing long after university.
