Keep your tissues ready: Ranking the saddest deaths in Squid Game season three
These deaths emotionally scarred me for life
Okay, if Squid Game gave me anything besides a crash course in Korean childhood games, it was straight-up trauma. Those “games” were brutal. And watching good people face impossible moral choices, having to pick between their own survival and the lives of others, was both fascinating and heartbreaking. But some of the deaths in Squid Game season three genuinely shook me. I had to pause, stare out the window, drink some water, and mentally recover before pressing play again.
So, here’s the ranking of the saddest deaths from Squid Game season three that hit really hard.
5. Gi-hun

via Netflix
This one might surprise people. His death felt both expected and avoidable, which made it even worse. There could’ve been an ending where he got on the plane, saw his daughter, lived his life. The creators even toyed with that version. But no. Instead, he died trying to save someone else’s child. And the truly haunting bit is his own daughter will never know what happened to him… or why. It’s just tragic. He should’ve just gotten on the plane.
4. Player 149

via Netflix
I can’t even begin to imagine what she went through. Killing your own child to save someone else’s? That’s pain on another level. I honestly thought she’d stay in the game to protect Player 222 and her baby. But she couldn’t. And you know what? I don’t blame her. It was too much. Just… heartbreaking.
3. Player 007

via Netflix

I didn’t even like him that much at first, but wow did his death hit like a truck. The moment his own mother, Player 149, stabbed him to protect Player 222 and the baby? Goosebumps. The way he looked at her, just… pure sadness. You could feel the betrayal and confusion in his eyes. It was a horrible, powerful moment.
2. Player 222

via Netflix
So many people online are saying, “Oh, she could’ve just hopped on one leg.” Excuse me? She had literally just given birth and had a badly sprained ankle. Give the woman a break. The way she died was just… so unfair. I saw it coming, and I still cried when it happened. She deserved better. I was rooting for her.
1. Player 120

via Netflix
This one wrecked me. When I realised what Player 333 had done, I actually got chills. Player 120 was the best character in Squid Game, no argument. Strong, honest, compassionate, she was everything that place lacked. If she’d just closed the door behind her, she would’ve made it. And if she hadn’t died, she probably would’ve won. She was army-trained, always alert. But that one moment, the one time she let her guard down. I’m honestly shaking just thinking about it. Her death was definitely the saddest death in Squid Game season three.
