Charli XCX rants about ‘fraud’ claims after being accused of miming at Glastonbury
We haven’t seen lip syncing like this since Drag Race
Charli XCX has savagely responded to people who claimed she was miming during her Glastonbury set, and while she didn’t reject the notion of lip syncing, she called the entire “discourse” a snooze fest.
Look, there are some artists that you go to watch for spectacular displays of vocal prowess – Lady Gaga, Adele, Beyoncé, Kelly Clarkson – but there are also recording artists that are more known for putting on a standout show. Such icons might include Britney Spears, Addison Rae, and Tate McRae. Charli XCX is definitely the latter, and while no one is doubting her singing capabilities, if you went to her Glasto set expecting high-pitch riffs and otherworldly vocal bridges, that’s your fault.
Still, people didn’t refrain from pointing out Charli XCX’s miming during her Glastonbury set, with videos racking up millions of views on TikTok as armchair experts shared their thoughts on Twitter.
“Imagine going to Glastonbury to watch CharliXCX headline and she autotunes and mimes through the whole damn set!” one person wrote on Twitter.
Another said: “Charli XCX miming her way through every song at Glastonbury, her mic only used for the odd ‘Come On’ shout. Guess she dresses like that to stop people from looking at her lip sync. Live should be live. #charlixcx #Glasto.”

Well, Charli saw those tweets and responded accordingly.
Charli XCX didn’t deny miming at Glastonbury
Following her set at Glastonbury, Charli XCX posted a few savage messages to the people who accused her of miming during her set. Did she deny recreating a lip sync for your life from RuPaul’s Drag Race? Nah.
like the idea that singing with deliberate autotune makes you a fraud or that not having a traditional band suddenly means you must not be a “real artist” is like, the most boring take ever. yawn sorry just fell asleep xx

Though it might be a little bit rich to suggest people wanting live music at a festival are somehow rejecting her being a real artist, she then philosophised the wider miming discourse.
but to be honest… i enjoy the discourse. imo the best art is divisive and confrontational and often evolves into truly interesting culture rather than being like kind of ok, easily understood and sort of forgettable.

It’s super fascinating to me.”

Again, if you watched Charli XCX expecting the greatest show of vocal talent since Cynthia Erivo’s Defying Gravity, then more fool you, but Charli’s response might be even stranger. Not singing live doesn’t make you a “divisive and confrontational” artist who is starting a conversation – that was Bobby Vylan.
