Um, here’s what plane yoga actually is and why you keep seeing people on TikTok doing it
You’ve heard of aerobics, now get ready for air-robics
A video recently blew up on TikTok of a plane full of people doing what seemed to be some kind of yoga before a flight – and that’s all the context we got.
With over 1.5 million views, it had a lot of people questioning what plane yoga is and more importantly – why haven’t we been asked to do it before?
Here’s what plane yoga actually is
@user1118383829333 what in the air-robics is going on @easyJet
The viral clip shows an entire flight of people sat in their seats whilst lifting their arms and stretching, while a voice over the tannoy guides them to move left, to right, to middle. And what’s even weirder is that everyone is actively participating.
This all occurs while Maniac plays in the background, giving the whole situation a very 80’s aerobics feel. This isn’t a plane version of the Cha-Cha slide though, but the way people reacted to the TikTok would make you think it was. There’s actually a completely normal explanation for this, despite how odd it looks.
Another video shows an entire cabin of passengers doing yoga at the crew’s instruction, with the user who posted the video captioning it “what in the air-robics is going on @easyjet”, and you’re probably wondering the same thing.
Strange though it may seem, this isn’t even a one off, as a similar incident was recorded on a Southwest Flight in America.
@orissakelly Morning yoga with @Southwest Airlines 😂 they are so cunning i love it! #funny #airline #flying #southwestairlines #airplane
Both videos show people stretching side to side, while a voice rings over the tannoy, guiding their next movement, and the fact that it’s not just happening on UK flights show that maybe there’s a method in the (apparent) madness.
So why is everyone doing airplane yoga?
You’re probably wondering that someone’s taken “in-flight entertainment” too far.

Don’t worry, there’s an explanation and it’s less weird than you think. These incidents both happened on a long haul flight. Long story short, flying at altitude can impact your circulation, increase stiffness in your joints, and increase risk of blood clots, so it appears that the crew put together some yoga, in order to keep everyone comfortable.
Stretching at altitude is also said to relieve muscle tension and creates a relaxed and grounded atmosphere (pun intended).
All in all, it seems that while you have to pay the extra £20 for an overweight bad, it’s nice to know that you’re getting a free yoga session and good circulation, so it’s quite the bargain overall.
