Here’s whether Travis Scott was punished following the 2021 Astroworld crowd crush

The incident is explored in Netflix’s Trainwreck: The Astroworld Tragedy

On 5th November 2021, what began as an exciting evening at Travis Scott’s two-day music festival, Astroworld, ended in tragedy when a deadly crowd crush during his headline set left 10 people dead and more than 300 injured.

Now, the new Netflix documentary, Trainwreck: The Astroworld Tragedy, is highlighting the series of failures that contributed to the catastrophe, chaos that former Houston Police commander Mark Lentini described as “totally predictable.”

The incident has left many questioning who should be held accountable, and whether Scott faced any criminal consequences.

Although Scott paused his performance several times to alert organisers that people in the crowd needed medical assistance, according to witnesses the show continued until around 10:15pm, even as audience members had already lost consciousness.

A mass casualty incident was declared at 9:38pm, yet despite multiple pleas from festival-goers to stop the concert, none succeeded in halting the show.

It was later confirmed that all 10 victims died from “compression asphyxia,” a condition that occurs when external pressure prevents the chest from expanding, cutting off the body’s oxygen supply.

In the aftermath, numerous lawsuits were filed by victims and their families against Scott and others involved, alleging a failure to implement proper safety measures and emergency protocols. By June 2024, all 10 wrongful death cases had been settled out of court, with Scott and other defendants agreeing to undisclosed compensation.

Scott was one of six individuals investigated in connection with the crowd surge, but a Texas grand jury ultimately determined that no one could be held criminally responsible. As a result, Scott did not face any charges.

Astroworld was cancelled following the tragedy and has not returned since.

Shortly after the event, Scott posted an apology video on social media, saying: “I just want to send out prayers to the ones that were lost last night.

“We’re actually working right now to identify the families so we can help assist them through this tough time.”

He also told X he was “absolutely devastated” to learn of the incident after the concert. He claimed he was unaware of the severity of the situation at the time, stating he could not hear cries for help over the music and chaos.

In a 2023 interview with GQ, Scott spoke about the emotional impact the event had on him: “[I want people] to know I have pain too. I have concerns, things that I think about, and the things I see on a day-to-day basis I think about them. And every day I want to find change in the things, to make things better, make myself better. It’s just like: I go through things like everyone else.”

He also launched Project HEAL, a long-term initiative aimed at supporting community projects and improving safety standards at large-scale live events.

Travis Scott has been contacted for comment.
