Erm, Sam Thompson tracked his ancestry and it turns out his posh boy persona is totally fake

How did I not know Sam Thompson’s real name??

He might now be a beloved national sweetheart with a loveable bulldog on his arm in the form of Pete Wicks, but when we were first introduced to Sam Thompson, there was no doubting his posh upbringing.

We met Sam Thompson for the first time in 2013 when he joined the ranks of Made in Chelsea, a show about the affluent residents of one of London’s swankiest areas. In total, he starred in 16 seasons alongside other aristocratic personalities such as Mark-Francis Vandelli, Binky Felstead, and Tiffany Watson. Given the nature of the reality TV show, Sam Thompson’s posh totty status became central to our perception of him.

But now, in the final episode of ITV’s DNA Journey that is set to air on Thursday, Sam learns of his true origins and how his family just decided to be high-class.

In the upcoming final episode of DNA Journey, Sam Thompson is joined by his bestie Marvin Humes to find out the truth of their heritage. Marvin discovers how his family came to the UK, with his great-grandmother sacrificing her own happiness to have Marvin’s grandmother Rose come to England as part of the Windrush generation.

“I can only think of myself as a parent, it’s heartbreaking to think she’d never see her again. Without this happening in 1958, I wouldn’t be standing here today. She’s the reason. All my family back home in England, we all owe everything to her, for that sacrifice she made on this pier,” Marvin says in the episode.

According to The Mirror, Sam flies into a panic when he discovers he, too, has a history with Jamaica.

“It doesn’t sound good, don’t say it…” he says, though thankfully, there is no slavery connection. In reality, his great-grandfather was posted there before playing a vital role in the downfall of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo. “Oh my God, I’m so happy, you really scared me, we were all thinking it.”

Sam, whose real name is actually Sam Robert De Courcy Thompson, then learns how his great-grandfather Charles simply decided to add De Courcy to the family name to improve social standing.

“We faked it, and I’m over the moon. I’ve got a signet ring and it doesn’t mean anything. We just gave it to ourselves. It’s like those people who buy a knighthood just to call themselves sir or lady. That’s us!” he laughs.

Low-key quite genius when you think about it.
