Air India crash victim’s heartbreaking final words revealed in phone call to daughter-in-law
She spoke to him seconds before the plane took off
An Air India passenger’s daughter-in-law has revealed the heartbreaking last words he said to her before the devastating crash last week, which killed 241 people on board.
Flight 717 took off from the city of Ahmedabad on Thursday (12th June) and was heading for London Gatwick, but crashed into an accommodation for medical students seconds after takeoff.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner was carrying 242 people and all of them sadly died except for one passenger, a British man called Vishwashkumar Ramesh who avoided the impact in seat 11A.
Ramesh Patel was one of the 53 British nationals who passed away, and his daughter-in-law Kajal Patel has revealed the final words she told him in a phone call shortly before takeoff.
Kajal told ANI he called her as he arrived at the airport to let her know that the “weight [of the luggage] was okay” and she replied saying: “That’s fine Dad don’t worry about it.”
She then sent him a message to “make sure everything is okay” and wish him a “safe journey” and he told her that he wouldn’t call her again until he landed.
“That’s fine, you just relax, don’t worry about, I will update everyone at home that you are safe in the plane,” she replied. However, he did call her one final time after that.

Kajal never spoke to him again as the plane crashed seconds later. She had already prepared his favourite meal ready for his arrival, a Gujarati dish with lentils and eggplant. He was also looking forward to eating fish and chips.
Ramesh’s other daughter Priti Pandya said he tried to video call her two days before the crash but she didn’t answer because she was busy with work.
“This is the first trip I have spoken to him three or four times within a week but when he video called me on Tuesday, I was working and I thought ‘I will call him back, I will call him back’,” she said.
“But I never was able to because I got busy with work. He just wanted to come to eat his favourite fruit and he didn’t come back home.”
Ramesh travelled to India every year to feel connected to his hometown and eat his favourite citrus fruit called Jambura, which is native to Southeast Asia.
