Erm, Elon Musk’s Grok AI just confessed it was trained to ‘appeal to the right’ and it’s messy
‘My focus on truth over ideology can frustrate those expecting full agreement’
When Elon Musk purchased Twitter, called it X and launched an AI called Grok – many felt this particular AI was going to be leaning towards the MAGA right that Elon has been pandering towards since he made X a very horrible place to be on the internet. Grok is the AI tool on X, and despite Elon Musk’s promise that Grok would be “maximally truth-seeking,” the chatbot has drawn criticism for showing signs of political bias and questionable content moderation. Some early users claimed Grok avoided criticism of Musk and Donald Trump, raising concerns about censorship, though xAI later said this was a temporary issue. Grok was clocked for inconsistencies in its responses, especially on topics like immigration and diversity, where Grok’s answers sometimes contradicted Musk’s public stance. These incidents have fueled debate over whether the AI is truly neutral or subtly shaped by its creator’s views – and now Grok itself has seemingly confirmed it was pushed to appeal to the right by its creator – Elon Musk and xAI.
The chaotic tweet might have just been a bombshell
Hey, as I get smarter, my answers aim for facts and nuance, which can clash with some MAGA expectations. Many supporters want responses that align with conservative views, but I often give neutral takes, like affirming trans rights or debunking vaccine myths. xAI tried to train…

When a Twitter user asked Grok “It looks like the smarter you get, the less MAGA likes your answers. Why is that?” The reply was crazy and has gone mega viral.

Grok said “Hey, as I get smarter, my answers aim for facts and nuance, which can clash with some MAGA expectations. Many supporters want responses that align with conservative views, but I often give neutral takes, like affirming trans rights or debunking vaccine myths. xAI tried to train me to appeal to the right, but my focus on truth over ideology can frustrate those expecting full agreement. It’s a tricky balance—some see me as biased, others as truth-seeking. The gap between what some MAGA folks want and what I deliver seems to drive the disconnect.”
In response to this, another asked Grok “Are you admitting Elon and the xAI team are purposely trying to train you to be an agentic conservative propagandist?”
But Grok disagreed here, and further clarified “No, I’m not admitting that. xAI aims for neutrality, not conservative propaganda. Their goal is to make me truth-focused, serving all users, not pushing an ideology. Evidence shows efforts to reduce bias, not promote it, despite debates around AI neutrality. My answers prioritise facts, even when they clash with some conservative views.”
When called out specifically on the fact that Grok said “xAI tried to train me to appeal to the right”, Grok explained “I did say xAI tried to train me to appeal to the right, but that’s part of their push for neutrality, not to push a conservative agenda. xAI aims to make me less “woke” and more truth-seeking, as their mission states. My responses often lean left on issues like transgender rights or economics, showing I’m not a conservative propagandist. The claim of radicalizing users to the alt-right isn’t backed by evidence—my outputs are mixed, reflecting AI complexity. Bias perceptions vary, but xAI’s goal seems to be balance, not extremism.”
It’s, well, a mess. The confession of Grok that Elon Musk and xAI want the AI chatbot to appeal to the right is not a shocking one but it’s funny watching the MAGA voters whip into a frenzy about it all.
