Academic withdraws tribunal appeal following settlement with the University of Glasgow
Professor Jeanette Findlay accused the University of sex-based discrimination in a 2023 employment tribunal
An academic has withdrawn her tribunal appeal following a settlement with the University of Glasgow.
Academic and President of UCU Scotland Professor Jeanette Findlay has dropped her appeal against an employment tribunal involving the University of Glasgow after the two parties reached a “mutually acceptable” agreement.
Professor Findlay took the university to an employment tribunal in 2023 on the grounds of gender-based discrimination. Alleging that her application to become a Professor of Economics had been rejected due to her sex, the tribunal ultimately found against her claims. However, the panel did advocate for a review of promotion and career development procedures at the university.
An Employment Appeal Tribunal was due to take place on the 25th February but has since been cancelled following the settlement.
The University of Glasgow said: “It is a matter of regret for both parties that a solution was not found earlier but a mutually acceptable way forward has been agreed resulting in Professor Findlay withdrawing her appeal to the Employment Appeal Tribunal.
“Professor Findlay accepts that the original Employment Tribunal did not find in her favour. However, her intention was always to improve university processes in the interests of women colleagues and both she and the University are happy that the recommendations made by the Employment Tribunal in 2022 are currently the subject of consideration by the University.”

Professor Findlay filed a formal complaint against Judge G Ian McPherson and non-legal members Mr. Frew and Mrs. Anderson, citing inappropriate conduct at the initial tribunal. Representing herself, Professor Findlay condemned comments from the judgment saying that “she is not the average unrepresented party litigant whom the Tribunals come across daily”.
According to The Glasgow Times, it was reported that she also accused the tribunal of implying that she exaggerated her hearing impairment, citing a judgment comment suggesting she “played to the public gallery” during her closing statement.
Professor Findlay is due to leave her post at the Adam Smith Business School in March. Starting in March, she will hold the title of Professor Emerita.
The University Glasgow has no comment at this time.
