With the 2025 Academy Awards around the corner, we’re taking a look at the best films shot in Lincoln to see which ones are worthy of a little gold man


Lincoln is a beautiful historic city, so when Hollywood wants to make beautiful historic films, Lincoln is the perfect setting. Here are five of the best and most famous films which feature our city. Spoiler Alert: Lincoln Cathedral wins the Best Leading Actor on this list.

1. The Da Vinci Code (2006)

The Cathedral’s bells fell silent for the first time since the Second World War during filming of this adaptation of Dan Brown’s best-selling novel series. Also, a nun prayed outside the film set for twelve hours in protest. That deserves an A for effort.

2. Napoleon (2023)

Lincoln Cathedral was transformed into Paris’ Notre Dame over the two days Ridley Scott’s historical epic filmed there. The real Oscars nominated this film for three awards so it deserves a mention here for Best Frenchification of Lincoln.

3. The Wild and The Willing (1962)

In this vintage number, Lincoln Castle stands in as a university. The Victorian prison cells aren’t far off the vibes of a seminar room at 5pm on a Friday. Extra points to the casting director for giving Ian McShane his debut role and beginning his Lincoln to Kung Fu Panda pipeline.

4. The King (2019)

Lincoln Cathedral is really popular on this list. Netflix decided to use it for the coronation scene in its adaption of Shakespeare’s Henriad. More importantly, this film wins the award for best ‘I Can’t Believe Timothee Chalamet Was In Lincoln And I Didn’t Know About It’ moment.

5. The Young Victoria (2009)

For one final time on this list, Lincoln Cathedral features as the set for this retelling of Queen Victoria’s early years on the throne. This time, it masquerading as Westminster Abbey for another coronation scene. Take in another image of our beautiful cathedral.
