How to spend Valentine’s Day solo in York and not lose your mind

Leave the flat, please

The time has come again for the world to divide into the big two: Couples and singles. This year, as many before, I’m on team singles and I’ve taken it upon myself to give you the most uplifting checklist on spending this “lovely” day alone.

Disclaimer: It doesn’t include hating on couples or drowning in chocolate… (maybe a little).

This year Valentine’s Day falls on a Friday. So, this little itinerary can be adapted regardless of your availability around classes that day and continue into the weekend!

Book in an activity

Starting the day with a little physical activity will go a long way. A morning walk in the crisp weather will benefit your mental and physical health. York offers beautiful streets for you to walk and get lost in, listening to music or thinking about life. If going to town is too much of an effort, campus will be the perfect nature rendezvous!

If you’re one of the more motivated people you can even go for a swim or gym session. Anything to get the blood flowing and release tension will be beneficial for getting through the day.

Treat yourself

You deserve to treat yourself. Whether it be flowers, something tasty or a cheeky Jellycat, spending some money on yourself will bring the desired dose of serotonin. The objective here is to fill your own cup and not wallow in self-pity that no one’s getting you anything.

I would go for the essentials: Flowers, Waterstones trip and ending with a sweet treat. If you’re on a budget go for the discounted flowers (they need some love too), WHSmiths for cheaper books and Poundland for some chocolate! Perfect.

Comfort

Comfort is key today. Cook yourself a favourite meal. Watch your favourite movie or show. Go to a place you love in York. My recommendations are Coffee Culture and The Hop. Depends on the type of person you are.

Coffee Culture offers great hot beverages, cozy vibe and amazing food. It’s small enough so it’s not intimidating to sit alone and read a book or watch something. The Hop has an astronomical vibe. It’s for the history students, the romantasy readers and the pizza enthusiasts. It’s by far my favourite spot and I will be paying it a visit.

If you turn this solo day into Galentine’s, you can get the two for £14 cocktails, listen to medieval style versions of popular songs and enjoy great food. Or keeping it as a solo day, get on the lunchtime offer of pizza and a pint for £12.95.

The good side of being single on Valentine’s is that you can spend it however you want. No compromises or worry for things going right – you have full control over your day.

Go big or go home

Now if you’re not the party type just skip this section. End the day snuggled in blankets with soft music in the background. But if you’re in the mood to go out… it’s Friday night after all. Traffic light parties seems to be popular so grab your other single, “it’s complicated” or taken friends and end the night with dancing, drinking and having a blast.

On a serious note, it’s okay to feel down when you see all the people in love being showy. Especially if you were recently broken up with. But prioritise yourself and fill the gaps. It’ll be alright!
