Bristol University defeats Exeter Uni on University Challenge in outstanding performance
Team Bristol has made the quarter-finals after defeating Exeter 290-35
Yesterday’s (Monday 16th December) episode of the University Challenge saw Bristol University defeat Exeter in an impressive performance, with a 255-point victory.
Winning the episode has secured Bristol a place in the quarter-finals of this year’s competition, joining UCL and the Open University.
The Bristol team is comprised of Ted Warner, completing an MSci biology, Bridie Rogers, studying medicine, Olivia Watts, doing a PhD in organic chemistry, and their captain, Kevin Flanagan, doing a PhD in AI.
Bristol started strong with a perfect first round of starter and bonus questions and managed to keep up their impressive performance throughout.
The team’s breadth of knowledge soon became clear, as they were able to answer a diverse range of questions, from medical terms to insects in art.
Maintaining a considerable lead throughout, the Bristol team ended the episode with 290 points, beating Exeter at 35. This means that Bristol has secured a place in the quarter-finals, which will take place in early 2025.
Bristol enjoyed a similar success in their first round against Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, with a score of 325-80.
Last night’s episode was the last before a pause in Series 54 for the Christmas Special series.
Bristol alumni are taking part in this exciting competition, going against Worcester College, Oxford, airing on Christmas Eve at 20:45 on BBC Two.
The Bristol team is made up of notable alumni, including Lord Paul Boateng, a member of the House of Lords who became the UK’s first Black Cabinet Minister in 2002.
Also on the team is Danny Robins, an award-winning writer, broadcaster and journalist, who wrote the successful West End play, 2:22 A Ghost Story.

Bristol University last appeared on the University Challenge in 2022, when the team made it to the final – the first time in the university’s history. The team lost after a close match with Durham, who won by a narrow 35 points.
