Get ready, movie buffs: here’s your guide to what’s on at the Dukes this November

Get your popcorn ready for a month of Oscar contenders and old classics at Lancaster’s best indie cinema.


Eager for a break from the mounting workload, or just fancy a cinema trip with friends? November is lining up to be an amazing month for movies at the Dukes with returning sequels, two Sebastian Stan movies (aren’t we lucky!) and Oscar contenders all making a visit to the big screen.

So get your calendars out and your mates ready and raring to go. With so many films happening, the Dukes have you covered with a range of film genres to go and see. Here are all the movies making an appearance at the Dukes this month.

Blockbusters:

Paddington in Peru (2024):

If they kill Aunt Lucy off I will not be happy. Without a doubt if this film delivers, Paddington will become one of the best trilogies of all time. Remember your marmalade sandwiches to watch Paddington from November 22nd – 28th.

Gladiator II (2024):

24 years after the original, Ridley Scott returns with a phenomenal cast including Joseph Quinn, Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington to name but a few. Crashing into the Dukes from November 29th.

Indie films

The Outrun (2024):

Based on Amy Liptrot’s best-selling memoir, The Outrun follows Rona as she returns home from rehab and explores her struggles with addiction and how nature can restore a sense of well-being. Screening from November 5th – 6th.

The Critic (2024):

Ian McKellen stars as the most feared theatre critic who comes into conflict with his new boss. Catch it on November 5th and 7th.

The Apprentice (2024):

Sebastian Stan portrays a young Donald Trump following his rise to power.  November 5th (very clever indeed Dukes).

A Different Man (2024):

I’m here for more Sebastian Stan. Here, Stan plays the lead character Edward, an aspiring actor who undergoes a procedure to change his appearance who later becomes focused on reclaiming what he had. November 5th (anyone for a Stan double bill) and 7th.

Timestalker (2024):

This comedy follows Agnes who repeatedly falls for the wrong guy, only to die and be reincarnated a century later and face the same issue all over again. See this time-travelling comedy from November  5th to 7th.

Lee (2024):

Kate Winslet stars as Lee Miller, a photojournalist who documents the harsh experiences of World War II. For one night only on November 7th.

Blitz (2024):

This war film is about a young boy George who after being evacuated to the countryside seeks to return to his mum and grandad in London. Watch Blitz from November 8th to 14th.

Small Things Like These (2024):

Cillian Murphy stars as a father who discovers secrets from the convent, forcing him to come to terms with his own past and religion. You had me at Cillian Murphy. See Murphy’s stellar performance from  November 15th – 21st.

Anora (2024):

If you follow the Oscars race then you’ll have heard of Anora. A modern day Cinderella story about a young sex worker meeting the son of a Russian oligarch. Start your Oscar predictions with Anora from November 15th – 21st.

Bird (2024):

Starring Barry Keoghan, Bird is a coming of age tale about marginalised life in the face of modern society. Flying into the Dukes from November 22nd to 28th.

The Holy Mountain (1973):

Now this film caused absolute chaos at the Cannes Film Festival for several reasons including to its subject matter, and if that doesn’t catch your attention, I’m not sure what will. My one bit of advice, make sure your aware of what you’re in for on November 24th.

Classics

Watership Down (1978):

An absolute classic for a reason. Watership Down will tug on your heartstrings throughout and don’t be surprised if you end up shedding a tear. Bring your tissues for November 8th – 9th.

Life of Pi (2012):

We’ve all read the book at school and now we can relive the emotional tale on the big screen. Don’t miss the only screening on November 19th.

Wallace and Gromit (1989 – 2005):

To get us ready for Christmas Day, the Dukes are showing the complete collection of Wallace and Gromit on the 16th – 17th and then all together on the 23rd of November.

International Films:

Emilia Perez (2024):

After winning 2 awards at Cannes, the French film Emilia Perez follows the relationship between a cartel boss who, with the help of a lawyer, undergoes gender transition surgery to live as their true self. Watch it before it’s too late from November 5th to 7th.

The Room Next Door (2024):

With his debut English language film, Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar creates a story about 2 close friends who meet again in strange circumstances after years of being out of contact. Screening a mighty 14 times across November 8th – 28th.

Daisies (1924):

Marking its 100th anniversary, Dukes is showing Daisies, one of the most famous ground-breaking Czech films of the 1960s on November 17th.

National Theatre’s Prima Facie (2022):

The most watched National Theatre live production, starring Jodie Comer, comes to the Dukes November 5th to the 9th.

Documentaries

Dahomey:

This documentary covers 26 royal treasures and their journey back to their home country, the Republic of Benin, exploring colonialism and cultural heritage. A fascinating documentary showing November 26th – 28th.

Special events:

Oxide Ghosts: The Brass Eye Tapes with director Q & A.

Follows the behind the scenes of the hit show Brass Eye. One of the only chances to see this film is at live events. Watch it November 12th.

Mystery Film

A true staple of the Dukes every student must attend at least once. Past films have included: Memento, Pan’s Labyrinth and Timestalker. See the Mystery Film on November 28th.
