Here are my top 10 favourite things as a final year Exeter Uni student
Kayaks, cafes and, of course, TP
As a student going into their final year, I’ve become well accustomed to the best places in Exeter. Previous students really weren’t lying when they said that undergrad is the fastest three years of your life. It’s been a rollercoaster, but I feel so lucky to live in Exeter, and I wouldn’t wish to be anywhere else.
Whether it’s going for a coffee, exploring the beaches or our green campus, or even for a good night out (yes, they do exist in Exeter), here are my top ten things about Exeter that I love, and want you to love too. So, in no particular order…
1. The Piece
The nightlife in Exeter is controversial, but everybody can agree that Timepiece is where it’s at. Whether it’s for showcasing your latest moves on the dance floor, or just grabbing a drink in Old Timers, it’s got everything needed for a great night out with friends. It’s even a firm favourite for musical legends Snoop Dogg and Chris Martin, so it’s gotta be a good night.
2. Artigiano’s
Fancy a change from your usual pub and club? Visit Artigiano for the best cocktails and good vibes. Or, get some avocado on toast and an iced coffee, for a classic “Exetah” breakfast, and use it as a study space on your days off. And there are even jazz evenings on a Monday if you fancy jazz-ing it up a little.
3. Reed Hall
Most Read
Everybody needs to touch grass after being on their screens all day: it’s crucial for your mental and physical well-being. We are so lucky that such a beautiful spot can be on our campus. It’s my favourite place to sit and unwind, alone with a book or for a catch-up with friends. There’s so much to explore with the different gardens, and it makes for perfect society ball photos too.
4. The cafes
Exeter is rich in its range of cafes, but there is one that takes first place for me! Head on down to the Quay to visit Veg Box, a great plant-based cafe, for a spot of brunch or a coffee. Plus, for you dog lovers, furry friends are welcome too, and they even have their own cafe dog.
5. Impy
Of course, this has to be the best Spoons in Exeter. A pint underneath the fairy lights? Sign. Me. Up.
6. Coffee #1
If you’re looking to get out of the house and have a study day, Coffee #1 is a great option. It has the perfect balance between a bustling atmosphere, without feeling too overwhelming. They do a student discount, which is always an added bonus too.
7. The beaches
Visiting Exmouth in the winter for a brisk walk with a hot chocolate is a great way to spend time with friends outside of the main city. As long as you wrap up warm, it’s just as good to visit as it is in the summer. Dawlish Warren is a firm favourite too if you don’t mind the longer train journey – though notably better for a summer visit.
In the wise words of Sabrina, please please please visit North Devon in the third term too! It’s often forgotten, and Ilfracombe is so beautiful.
8. Christmas markets
Is there really anything better than the Cathedral Green at Christmas? There are so many stalls to explore, whether you want a warm hot chocolate or a handmade gift to give your mum at Christmas. You have to try the churros too.
9. Kayaking
Though we’re headed deep into the winter months, my favourite summer activity (aside from going to the beach of course), has to be the kayak hire by the Quay. Head on down with your friends for an hour on the water, where you’ll kayak to the Double Locks pub for a drink and a snack! Watch out for the swans though.
10. The societies
If I’m going to be biassed, as an English student, I’m definitely going to say English Society is one of my favourite things about Exeter. Especially for you book lovers, it really does have the best community. But if that isn’t calling your name, Yoga Society is also where it’s at. It’s perfect for all abilities (trust me, I’m a total beginner) and it’s a great way to get some exercise in.
