Durham and dietary requirements: Four of the best restaurants to go to in the city

A list of the best places to eat in Durham to suit allergies and intolerances

From eggs to nuts to fish to sesame, you’re going to have to trust me and my experiences when it comes to Durham restaurants and allergies. I’m sure you already know how to deal with your dietary requirements at restaurants, whilst any restaurant can (and should) have an “allergy menu”.

However, unfortunately it is not everywhere you can ask staff “is this cooked separately from x?” and “what oil do you use in the frier?” and get a fully reassuring answer. You want to be able to put faith in the staff to prioritise and to take care of your dietary requirements, and here are the best places for that.

1. 19TWENTY Bar and Grill

The staff at this restaurant not only listen, note and meet every detail you can give them, they do so effortlessly. Whether you’re looking for steaks, burgers, hanging kebabs or fish and salad, the waiting and kitchen staff are proactive and adaptive to your needs.

It’s a plus that the food is incredible and affordable. Before you go, I would advise calling or providing details via online booking to ensure staff can focus on your needs during busy times.

2.  Zizzi’s

Zizzi’s is part of a chain of restaurants so if you’ve safely eaten at another branch, it’s likely the same at this one. However, even for first timers the pizza and pasta options can be safe for a range of dietary requirements. When you walk in, allergies is one of the first things they ask you, so you know this place is aware and proactive.

Waiting staff are easy to communicate with and the allergy menu is very detailed, whilst there is room to switch certain foods with others to fit your needs. You can rely on the caring staff of this Zizzi’s to make sure you’re tended to.

3. Cosy Club

Additional to its lovely setting and tasty food, Cosy Club goes above and beyond for your dietary requirements. The assurance and sense of confidence in their knowledge and ability when it comes to allergies makes you feel safe throughout your visit. The variety on the menu naturally makes it easier to cater for allergies and means you’re likely able to enjoy numerous things on the menu.

4. Isla

This cute brunch cafe is not to be under-estimated for its quality food and cosy setting. Whilst the menu signals your vegan and gluten free options, the staff can signal more complex dietary requirements also. This is certainly one to note if you enjoy the vibes of Riverview and Flat White.

Don’t be discouraged from eating in restaurants if you have allergies or intolerances, even though it can be intimidating. These are places I have personally had good experiences, BUT remember to prioritise what’s right for you, go with your gut (and epipens) in restaurants to keep yourself safe. Always contact restaurants in advance to be confident even before you arrive.
