Choose your fighter: The seven types of people you’ll definitely see on A-Level Results Day
Win or lose, we’re on the booze
A-Level Results Day 2024 is finally here – you did it! Often, the anticipation of a day you’re so worried about is worse than the day itself. So take a breath and collect yourself – whether your results went the way you planned today or if they couldn’t have gone more wrong, be reassured that you are not the first person to go through these emotions today.
There’s a lot riding on your results, so it’s understandable that everyone will experience the day differently. From tears to TikToks, there’s no judgement. Here’s how all the different types of people celebrate A-Level Results Day 2024.
That one person who shares everything online
You know exactly who I mean. The endless Stories uploaded to Instagram and Snapchat, the insufferable lip sync to an overused song whilst stood outside college, results paper in hand. As soon as that envelope’s ripped open, it’s straight to social media, sparks flying from those fingers as they type “hard work paid off”. And if their grades aren’t what they hoped for? You can bet there’s still a motivational quote to mask the disappointment.
If this is you, stop and think: Does anyone care your mum got you a helium balloon? Your boyfriend got you a celebratory Millie’s Cookie and your gran gave you 50 quid? Hundreds of thousands of people are celebrating today, Jessica.
The serial stress head

There’s always one and that one was me, back in the day. I feel for the serial stress heads – no amount of talking down can avert this crisis. The serial stresser is either in crisis mode over getting into their first choice and going into overdrive on university preperation, or – and most likely – their day involves a lot of pacing, breakdowns and hounding down those clearing hotlines, desperately trying to find a place at a reputable uni. If this is you, consider elbowing your way in on a different course and changing after a year.
The crisis mode contender student shows resilience, even if Results Day itself feels like a nightmare.
‘Im going on a gap year, anyway’
The gap year students don’t sweat A-Level Results Day too much. They’ve already decided that university can wait—they’ve got a year of traveling, working, and “finding themselves” ahead. Whether their results are amazing or not so great, it doesn’t really matter. You’ll find them browsing Skyscanner for cheap flights or updating their Pinterest board with exotic destinations. Their celebration might include a bon voyage party or simply booking a one way ticket to South East Asia. Either way, mummy and daddy are paying.
The one who didn’t even show up
Let’s be real, some people just couldn’t care less. Whether they knew the results wouldn’t be great or they just didn’t care about the whole A-Level shebang, the didn’t even show up type has probably already moved on. They might be at work, chilling at home, or even on holiday. Results Day is just another day, and they’ve got other plans—like scrolling through A-Level Results Day memes on X or finally starting that new hobby.
Every parent’s dream child
If you’re currently on your way to celebrate (or cry) over A-Level Results Day 2024 with family, you are definitely your parent’s favourite child. Friends can wait – you’ll make plenty more at uni anyway.
Their day starts with a nice family breakfast, followed by opening their results together in the comfort of their living room.
Expect tears of joy, big hugs, and a group family selfie. They’ll likely have a solid university offer lined up and already know where they’re going. Their celebration? A calm, relaxed evening with family and maybe a few close friends. And yes, they’ll be in bed by 11pm, to start packing for uni in the morning.
Win or lose, they’re on the booze
Regardless of their results, the party animal student’s reaction is the same: Go big or go home. Whether it’s celebrating straight A*s or drowning sorrows over a couple of Cs, you’ll find them at the pub by noon, rallying their mates for a night out that will go down in history. For the party animal, the way to celebrate A-Level Results Day is simple – it’s just another excuse for a massive night out, with the group chat blowing up and the stories the next day definitely overriding the importance of the results themselves.
If Monica Geller sat A-Levels
The Monica Geller student has been planning this day since Year 7. They’ve got their university offer ready, their accommodation sorted, and maybe even the first week of lectures mapped out. When they open their results and see they’ve met their offer, it’s pure euphoria. Expect happy tears, celebratory lunches, and immediate updates to their LinkedIn. If they haven’t met their offer? They’re likely to go into hardcore research mode, looking for alternative routes into their dream uni.
