Mel Schilling has revealed exactly how couples are paired on Married at First Sight Australia

She said there isn’t any science behind it

Married at First Sight is a dating experiment like no other. It’s literal premise is in the name and thousands of people apply to be on the show with the hopes of finding the love of their life.

Like any dating show, the results are not always positive and although some couples go all the way and have children and get married for real, it doesn’t always go that way.

So just how do they choose the couples on MAFS Australia? Love guru and relationship expert Mel Schilling has revealed the exact way couples are chosen on Married at First Sight, and it’s not all that surprising.

‘The process is pretty complex’

While Married at First Sight UK was airing in 2022, Melanie revealed to The Sun the ideas behind pairing each couple on the show. She said: “It’s very much a collaborative process between the three of us experts and the production team, so we’re all coming at it from different perspectives.”

When people decide to apply for Married at First Sight, they have to fill out a questionnaire which covers different topics from their sexual history to political views. Mel explained she and the producers read through the questionnaires to work out who to pair up.

She added: “I personally am very much about understanding a person’s values and their strengths and really look at what is likely to predict compatibility. And we all put our information together and then it’s just a really in depth, robust discussion about all the pros and cons of a couple because, at the end of the day, there’s no formula, it’s not an exact science.”

‘It leads to really interesting debates’

As to be assumed, it is difficult for all the experts to agree on the couples. Speaking about her experience with the Married at First Sight UK experts, Mel said due to them all being from “such different backgrounds”, they all bring different perspectives. “And that’s great, as it leads to some really interesting debates,” she explained.

Married at First Sight Australia has a panel of three experts, with two new faces for the UK audience. Alongside Mel is John Aiken and Alessandra Rampolla, who both have years of experience in relationship expertise and sexology. They are part of the bunch who work out how they choose the couples on MAFS Australia.
