Do you have a passion for writing? Do you have an urge to break the biggest new stories on campus, or a desire to upgrade your CV whilst having fun? The Tab is on the hunt for new writers and we want you!

The Tab is a nationwide publication with a much wider readership than other York student paper. It is a news site written by York Students, for York students. Being involved with The Tab is more than just simply writing articles. Writing for us gives you an insight into how modern media works whilst meeting new people.

We are holding our open meeting on Tuesday 26th September in Spring Lane Building SLB/004 at 6:30pm

The meeting is open to students of all years and subjects, no journalistic experience is required. Just come along and find out more about how to get involved in the UK’s biggest student news publication.

What is The Tab?

The Tab is a student news site with over six million monthly readers. As a student writer, your stories will be shared on The York Tab Facebook and Instagram pages, to a readership of thousands of students. The best articles are also shared across all of our pages and can reach readers all over the country.

We are always looking for new ideas and we cover everything from Long Boi and Bake Off to Uni strikes. We know students must prioritise deadlines (and Salvos) so the Tab is the perfect place for a stress-free vibe where you have the freedom to write for us once, or every week if you like.

So whether you’re an aspiring journalist, comedy writer, or just have a great knowledge of memes, we want you! If you have any article ideas, our DMs are always open (@theyorktab), or even better coming along to our open meeting!

Why you should get involved?

Stories written by The York Tab have been picked up by national publications including The BBCThe Daily Mail, and ITV, to name a few. The team also works with an Assistant Editor based at Tab HQ in London. They provide training in the basics of reporting and quality advice on how to make your writing stand out that you won’t get anywhere else.

It’s a great addition to any CV. Tab alumni frequently go on to work for famous publications all over the world, including VICE, BBC, The Times, and Vogue. Just this year, former Tab student writers started jobs at The Telegraph, The Sun, and Cosmopolitan, with former York Tab Editor securing a job at The BBC!

Not only this, The Tab is a fun way to get a new hobby and make some friends! As well as weekly meetings, we also host fun socials for you bond with fellow writers to really cement that stress-free vibe.

With the deadlines and hangovers uni has this tendency to make you stop enjoying the things you used to love. The Tab is the best way to get back into writing for fun. I mean, who wouldn’t want to spend their free time rating cheesy chips?

And for those passionate, future journalists amongst us, you have the chance to break big news stories such as York running out of accommodation and sending students to live in Hull or revealing footage of a York McDonald’s security guard punching girl.

Also we have merch. Who would want to miss out on that?

So, if The York Tab sounds like your thing, it couldn’t be easier to get involved. Come along to our open meeting in Spring Lane SLB/004 next Tuesday 26th September at 6:30pm. If you’re thinking of coming along, make sure to click going on our Facebook event!

If you have any questions and can’t make the open meeting, message our Instagram, Facebook or our Editor @jessrolfe_ and we’ll get back to you.
