Arrest made after second year Cardiff Met student dies following a suspected hit and run

A second-year Cardiff Met student has died after being involved in a collision near Caernarfon, last week.

North Wales Police has announced that a 19-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop after a collision and failing to report a collision. However, he has now been released on bail.

Joshua Lloyd Roberts, 19, died on 2nd June following a suspected hit and run on the A4085.

Police officers were called to the scene of the collision at 11:06pm after receiving a report that a man had been found on Ffordd Waunfawr, Caeathro.

He was then pronounced dead at the scene, according to North Wales Police.

Joshua, who was studying for a degree in sports performance analysis, has been described by his family as a “happy, outgoing, hardworking man” who “always had a lovely smile on his face”.

They also added that Joshua was “devoted to all his family and would give anyone his time” and a “passionate football fan and enjoyed supporting both Everton and his hometown of Caernarfon”.

A Go Fund Me fundraiser has been created for his family which has now raised over £12,000.

Joshua’s local football team, Clwb Peldroed Bontnewydd, will also be playing a charity match to raise money for his family.

An inquest has also now been opened regarding Joshua’s death. Kate Sutherland, senior coroner for North West Wales explained during the inquest that a post-mortem examination found that that Joshua died from “severe head injuries”

Inspector Iwan Roberts of North Wales Police Roads Policing Unit said: “Our heartfelt condolences remain with Joshua’s family at this incredibly difficult time. They are now being supported by specialist officers.

“We are urging anybody who may have been travelling in the area at around or shortly before 11pm on Friday, 2nd June to contact us. We are also urging anybody who may have dash cam footage to get in touch with us as soon as possible.

“Several lines of enquiry are underway to establish what happened on Friday night. We can confirm that a 19-year-old local man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop after a collision and failing to report a collision. He has since been released on bail pending further enquiries.
