Film sets spotted around student areas St Michael’s Hill and Park Street for upcoming series
Filming for ‘Young Sherlock’ and ‘Down Cemetery Road’ has been spotted in many recognisable Bristol locations
A new television series based on Andy Lane’s Young Sherlock Holmes novels is currently being filmed in Bristol’s Old City.
Film crews have been spotted in iconic Bristol areas such as St George’s off Park Street and Queen Square.
Directed and executively produced by Guy Richie, “Young Sherlock” is an eight-part series for Amazon Prime Video, set to feature After star Hero Fiennes Tiffin in the lead role.
The series has been described as “an action-packed origin story of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s beloved detective in an explosive re-imagining of this iconic character”.
The series’ plot is: “At age 19, Sherlock Holmes is disgraced, raw, unfiltered and unformed when he finds himself caught up in a murder mystery at Oxford University which threatens his freedom.
“Diving into his first-ever case with a wild lack of discipline, Sherlock manages to unravel a globe-trotting conspiracy that will change his life forever.”
Bristol 24/7 reported that Bristol is doubling for Oxford, evident in the posters on Corn Street that read “Queen’s Theatre Oxford”.
A film crew has also been spotted this week on St Michael’s Hill, a popular Bristol student area, by the Co-op and the Highbury Vaults pub.
According to @bristol_filming on X, the filming is for “Down Cemetery Road”, which has been spotted filming around Bristol over summer.
The thriller-series stars Emma Thompson and Ruth Wilson and is to be adapted from CWA Gold Dagger Award-winning author Mick Herron’s novel of the same name, which forms part of the “Oxford” book series.
In June, this saw the Arts and Social Sciences library appear as a police station, with a large camera crew blocking Tyndall’s Avenue.
Bristol University campus has previously been used as a filming location for popular series such as Netflix’s Sex Education, which featured Wills Memorial Library and the Chemistry building.
“Young Sherlock” is set to release some time in 2025 and “Down Cemetery Road” was due to screen in August 2024, but this has been postponed to late 2024 or 2025.
