Here’s what the hero of Netflix’s American Nightmare Misty Carausu is up to now

She got promoted this week!

Since its release on Netflix, American Nightmare hasn’t left the top spot on the top 10 list. That’s probably because the case is so unbelievable and unfathomable, that was its own demise. But, the one person who came through for the young couple at the centre of the story of American Nightmare was Misty Carausu – the show’s truest icon.

In 2015, Aaron Quinn rang police and told them his girlfriend Denise Huskins had been abducted. He said intruders had invaded their home in the early hours of the morning, tied them both up and blindfolded them, before taking Denise.

After two days of being held hostage, Denise was brought home. She said she had been locked in a house, and sexually assaulted twice. Police dismissed the claims, and at first accused Aaron of killing his girlfriend, and when Denise returned said she had tried to carry out a real life version of the film Gone Girl, and had faked her kidnaping.

After detective Misty Carausu picked up a similar case in her area and began to push for answers, it was finally proven that Denise and Aaron were telling the truth. They call Misty their “hero” and thank her for being the reason Matthew Muller ended up in prison. In 2016, Muller pleaded guilty to one count of federal kidnapping and was sentenced to 40 years.

So, where is Misty now?

Misty Carausu currently lives in Livermore, California, with her husband and their two young daughters. She is believed to have stayed close friends with Denise and Aaron.

Misty still works at the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, where she has been for over 19 years, but according to the office’s Instagram page, she was promoted just this week! “The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to announce the following promotions,” a post on the page reads. It then states Misty has been made Lieutenant, alongside four other colleagues.
