66 year old star of dating show slammed for admitting he’ll refuse to date women over 60
Despite the age range for the show literally being 60-75...
The newest Golden Bachelor star, Mel Owens, is facing major backlash for being “ageist” after he admitted to “cutting” any women who are over 60 when he appears on the dating show.
To make matter even worse, the age range to even be on the show is 60-75, so I fear he’s signed up to the wrong dating show.
Mel Owens is set to be the next Golden Bachelor, which if you haven’t heard if it is just The bachelor but for older people, but he’s already succeeded in ruffling more than just a few feathers.
During an appearance on the MGoBlue podcast earlier this month, Mel Owens admitted a conversation he’d had with the casting team about his age preferences, and his answers are… something.
He explained: “They ask me, ‘What’s your preference?’ So I just said [ages] 45 to 60, just being honest. And then we had lunch with the executive producer. I said, ‘You know, if they’re 60 or over, I’m cutting them.'”
He then claimed that one of the executives told him he couldn’t just cut any woman over the age of 60 because “this is not the Silver Bachelor.”
Mel Owens continued: “He goes, ‘You can’t use the word cut.’ I go, ‘Well, that’s an NFL term.’ They asked me, ‘What is my profile?’ Well, [the women] got to be fit because I’m staying in shape and work out and stuff.
And I told them, ‘Try to stay away from the artificial hips and the wigs, you know, that kind of stuff, right?'”
And his comments have garnered some serious criticism from viewers of the show, with Selling Sunset star Chrishell, publicly calling him out for his preferences.
She wrote on her Instagram story: “We love the Golden Bachelor because of how wholesome it is. This type of energy will ruin it.”
It seems the host of The Golden Bachelor has more faith in Mel, telling Us Weekly: “Mel is obviously super handsome. He’s very charming, he’s very intelligent, he’s very successful.
“He had this incredible pro football career and transitioned into becoming a successful warrior. I think while he’s had a lot of success professionally, there have been some hills and valleys in his personal life.”
He continued: “I think oftentimes you find out about somebody’s character when they go through tough, difficult times and it shifted all his focus and attention to raising his two boys. He really became this devoted father, he put so much energy into them.”
Jesse added: “He’s just looking for companionship. It’s just really pure and just listening to him talk about it is really moving. So I think he’s going to be a great lead. I think he’s a great choice to be our next Golden Bachelor.”
