James Acaster reportedly ‘needed a breather’ when filming Celebrity Traitors became intense

James Acaster was reportedly given a break from filming Celebrity Traitors after his co-stars became concerned about how he was coping with the intensity of the game.

James has already found himself in a particularly tricky position. On his second day at the castle, he was recruited as a Traitor by Richard E Grant and Maya Jama, despite previously saying he had hoped to play as a Faithful.

Ahead of the series, James admitted to the BBC that lying isn’t exactly his strong suit: “I’m not good at lying and I don’t make a habit of it.”

Reports suggest the pressure of the game became difficult for James during filming. Ahead of the new series, it was reported by The Sun that filming was briefly stopped after James became overwhelmed during a scene at the castle. According to reports, the pause gave him time to “have a breather” and collect himself.

A source told the publication: “The show is incredibly intense and during one particular scene at the castle, James became very anxious and panicked.

“Some of the other celebrities on the show spoke up and said cameras should stop rolling so he could calm down, and production were in agreement as well. Everyone looks out for each other and there is a proper sense of camaraderie. It was good for James to have a breather, as everyone felt it was for the best.”

Production has since addressed the reports, stressing that the welfare of contestants is a priority while filming the notoriously intense reality series.

A Celebrity Traitors spokesperson said: “The Traitors is a unique and immersive game, and we recognise that taking part can be intense at times.

“Our highest priority is always the safety and welfare of everyone taking part. Players are closely monitored and supported throughout by production, which includes a dedicated and experienced welfare team.”

James’s reported experience comes after he was unexpectedly recruited to the Traitors’ side alongside Richard E Grant and Maya Jama.

The decision could prove particularly awkward for the comedian given his own admission that he isn’t comfortable with lying, especially now he has to deceive the other celebrities in the castle.
