James Acaster could be the Celebrity Traitors’ recruit, as filming reportedly paused for him

There is a very specific problem with ending an episode of Celebrity Traitors on a cliffhanger when you’ve already told us what happens later in the series.

Thursday night’s episode left us waiting to find out whether Amol Rajan or James Acaster will become the third Traitor, after Maya Jama and Richard E Grant were given the rather enviable task of choosing between them.

But one pre-show report means we might already have a pretty good idea of what happens next.

Maya and Richard were the first two celebrities sent into the turret, where they were officially made Traitors and given the power to recruit someone else. Their options were Amol and James, with both celebrities having to make their case before the decision was made.

The unlucky one will then become the first celebrity to be “murdered” in the castle. So far, so dramatic.

Except, James has already been linked to a rather memorable moment further into filming. Before Celebrity Traitors even premiered, reports claimed filming had to be paused because James became “very anxious”.

A source told The Sun that the show was “incredibly intense” and said James became “very anxious and panicked”. According to the report, other celebrities apparently got involved on his behalf, resulting in production having to stop the cameras.

This creates a slight problem for the cliffhanger we’ve just been handed, because unless James’ reported ordeal happened almost immediately, he needs to still be around after this recruitment for it to have happened, and that would mean he has to get through the first murder.

Claudia Winkleman has already explained that whoever doesn’t get selected as the third Traitor will be the first person to leave the castle, so if the report about James came from later in the series, there is only one way this plays out: James gets recruited.

Of course, the report doesn’t give us an exact point in the series when the incident allegedly happened, so it’s not definitive proof of what Maya and Richard decided, but it does make the current cliffhanger feel slightly less mysterious.
