The Celebrity Traitors rules explained, as Richard E Grant immediately let slip he’s a Traitor
There’s actually a slightly confusing loophole
Richard E Grant has already managed to make things extremely awkward on Celebrity Traitors, after breaking the rules by telling people he was a Traitor almost immediately after being recruited.

The actor was tapped on the shoulder at the round table and, when Joe Lycett asked him about it, Richard straight away said he was a Traitor. He did it twice, too, which feels like a fairly bold strategy for a show where the entire point is keeping your identity secret.
There is actually a slightly confusing loophole here. While The Traitors has plenty of rules about keeping your role under wraps, Richard hadn’t technically agreed to them when he made the confession.
The rules became a talking point during the civilian series earlier this year, after Traitor Fiona appeared to reveal that fellow Traitor Rachel was also secretly working against the Faithful during a dramatic kitchen showdown.
So, what are the Traitors actually promising when they agree to take part?

Every series begins with Claudia inducting the newly selected Traitors. Before they officially begin their murderous new career, they’re asked to accept the Traitors’ Oath.
It reads: “Do you commit to lie and deceive throughout this game? Are you willing to murder one of your fellow players every single night? And do you vow to keep your identity and the identity of your fellow Traitors a secret?”
And yes, on the face of it, Richard announcing that he’s a Traitor doesn’t exactly scream keeping your identity a secret, but there’s a rather important timeline issue.
Richard’s confession happened before he had taken the oath. So although announcing his secret to other people sounds like precisely the sort of thing the oath is designed to prevent, he hadn’t actually made that promise yet.
Whether the rest of the cast will care about that technicality is another question entirely.
