‘Is this an anti-smoking campaign?’: People react to JoJo Siwa’s Bette Davis Eyes cover
And why does she look like Marilyn Monroe now?
JoJo Siwa has fulfilled her shock factor for July by releasing her cover of Bette Davis Eyes by Kim Carnes today, after teasing a sample all week.
Not only has JoJo’s signature gay pop icon image disappeared, but it has been replaced by a quintessential Marilyn Monroe look.
She is also covered in pearl necklaces, something that is a little more on brand now that she has gone public in her relationship with Chris Hughes.
Now I don’t think JoJo has ever been famed for incredible vocals, it is more the message behind her music videos and her extravagant dance moves.
However, the vocals in her new cover have definitely taken listeners by surprise, one Instagram user saying that they thought they were listening to an “anti-smoking campaign.”
So here are some of the funniest reactions to JoJo Siwa’s Bette Davis Eyes cover
@itsjojosiwa After performing this song live and then seeing the beautiful response to it, I decided to go record a studio vocal…. I’m undecided if I should release it on Spotify or not…. Would you want me to?!!!🤍 if you would, I’m thinking maybe end of this week?
People braced themselves for the release
The track dropped today, after a lot of people joked she was “threatening” to release it. One post by Pop Faction wrote: “JoJo Siwa threatens to drop new single Bette Davis Eyes.”
Now we know it’s a joke, but choosing to say “threatens” instead of “teases” is an example of how a lot of people were traumatised enough by the teaser and weren’t prepared for the whole track.
The TikTokker @whos._en also joked: “Former dance mums star JoJo Siwa threatens to release music.”
What in the cough syrup is going on?
The majority of the comments are questioning why JoJo’s voice is so raspy. One Instagram user, Faith, commented that Jojo is perhaps singing the wrong genre: “JoJo would be an INCREDIBLE metal singer.”
It seems like JoJo is experimenting with different genres at the moment.
It’s been referred to as an ‘anti-smoking’ advert

JoJo’s rasp has been praised by some, who claim she’s singing in this way in order to emulate the original. However, others have joked that the song has been made as a campaign against smoking because of her rasp and breathy sounds.
People ‘heard it against their consent’
@itsjojosiwa “Bette Davis Eyes” cover out now, stream everywhere you listen to music✨
Another unhinged response to the new cover is that people are saying that every time JoJo Siwa releases something, they always hear it against their consent. Whether that’s because its blown up on TikTok, or that it’s simply on everyone’s mouthes, they’re not wrong.
‘I’m so glad Bette David isn’t alive to hear this’
One commenter got over 35 thousand likes with this comment. @lime__wire wrote on TikTok: “I’m so glad Bette David isn’t alive to hear this.”
Another said: “Whoever Bette Davis is…I’m sorry she offended you :(.”
‘Trad wife era? Or quarter life crisis?’
The huge arc into this new look and era hasn’t gone unnoticed, with some people even going as far to say JoJo is “in her trad wife era”, according to one user, Kanye.
Influencer’s impersonations of the teaser
@austyn_farrell I thin we going to get a number 1 in my opinion! #jojosiwa #bettedavis #trending #trend
Popular social media star Austyn Farrell got this impersonation pretty spot on. Sporting a blonde wig, paper necklace and makeshift dress, Austyn impersonated us Jojo Siwa’s teaser with surprising accuracy. His video got over 200k views but a lot of viewers actually defended Jojo in the comments.
Of course, Chris Hughes loves it
Despite all of the reactions to JoJo Siwa’s Bette Davis Eyes cover, her boyfriend was of course going to support her. Whatever you think of how real the relationship between Jojo Siwa and Chris Hughes is, he is always supporting her publicly. Whether it’s all publicity or not is still to be seen.
Under the teaser TikTok video, Chris commented: “Ugh so good, you’re perfect”.
