Family issues desperate plea as tourist still trapped in active volcano after three days
Several unsuccessful rescue attempts have been made
Authorities in Indonesia have been scrambling for days after a tourist called Juliana Marins fell off a cliff in Cemara Nunggal and into Mount Rinjani’s active volcano.
This horrific saga started on the morning of June 21 when Juliana and other tourists were hiking to the peak of Mount Rinjani with a local guide. She reportedly asked for a break from the “really hard” climb, with the other hikers continuing on without her. When they returned, she was nowhere to be seen.
“She didn’t know what to do. When the guide came back because he saw that she was taking too long, he saw that she had fallen down there,” claimed her sister Marianna. According to local news outlets, Juliana had rolled 984 feet down the ravine before coming to a stop on a steep cliff face.

After police and rescue were called on Saturday, several rescue attempts have been made to save Juliana Marins from Mount Rinjani’s active volcano – all have been unsuccessful.
“The team has descended 300 metres, but we have not reached the victim,” Yarman, head of the Mount Rinjani National Park Office, said following the first attempt. “We tried to call out to her, but there was no response.”
On Monday, Gunung Rinjani National Park was able to use a drone to monitor a “visually motionless” Juliana at a depth of 500 meters. Another rescue attempt was also made, but sadly, it was called off due to poor weather conditions.
“Two rescue personnel were deployed to reach the victim’s location and check the second anchor point at a depth of 350m (1,140 ft). However, after observation, two large overhangs were found before reaching the victim, making it impossible to install the anchor. The rescue team had to climb to reach the victim,” the national park said in a Facebook post.

Juliana Marins’ friends and family have been keeping people updated through an Instagram called @resgatejulianamarins, which has amassed nearly 1.4 million followers in just three days.
“A whole day and they advanced only 250 meters below, there were 350 meters left to reach Juliana, and they retreated,” they said in a statement. “We need help, we need the rescue to reach Juliana urgently!”
Juliana’s sister Marianna also responded to fake videos of her sibling being rescued, responding: “We received, with great concern and apprehension, information that the rescue team took food, water and warm clothing to Juliana. This is not true. The information we have is that so far they have not been able to reach her, because the rescue ropes were not long enough, in addition to the low visibility.
“All the videos that were made are lies, including the one of the rescue arriving at her. The video was forged to look like that, along with this message associated with it. We even celebrated. It was a shock to find out that it was a lie.”
This is a developing story and more details are expected to follow.
