Attention future Warwick students: A freshers’ guide to picking your Warwick accommodation

How to absolutely slay your accom choices

| UPDATED

Whilst I am (almost) graduating, I will still defend my first year accommodation with my life. Whilst some people say it doesn’t matter what accommodation you pick, it’s about the people, I am here to tell you that is a vicious lie. Okay well, not quite, the people do matter a lot, but so does the accommodation when you have practically go on an expedition just to get to your lecture.

Whether you’re bothered about living close to the shops, the gym or central campus there is definitely an accommodation for you. In no particular order, here is the completely unlicensed and unsolicited guide to University of Warwick accommodation.

Cryfield Townhouses

I know I said the list is in no order, but it would simply feel wrong to start the list without an ode to what once was. Cryfield Townhouses has a bit of everything: Big kitchens, decent sized bedrooms and en-suites, it’s close to campus and the gym and even has its own hub for post, laundry and cinema and music rooms .A big plus is the double bed as well. It is however quite far from Tesco and Aldi so start hitting the gym now to get your steps in.

Cryfield Standard

The same great location as town houses, just with shared bathrooms and slightly older interiors, but still with access to the cinema rooms so it’s definitely up there as one of the best located accommodations. The walls also have a funky hexagonal pin board which does make the bedrooms look pretty cool. Each Cryfield Standard block has its own hangout space as well which can be great for pres or just hanging out.

Rootes

Probably the most infamous accommodation. Known for huge shared kitchens and wild parties, Rootes is not for the faint of heart. It is full of extraverts but also such a fun accommodation and great way to meet loads of people, which is so important for freshers. It does have a great location, being right on central campus and it is one of the cheaper accoms on campus as well, but does share bathrooms with about six people and there is even one Rootes kitchen with 23 students sharing, so make of that what you will.

Tocil

First of all, this accommodation definitely has some of the nicest views, being right in front of Tocil woods, which has loads of great walking trails. It has a great location, just off of central campus and fairly near to shops. Bathrooms are typically shared between four students and kitchens between 12.

Sherbourne

Another en-suite accommodation, with a big communal kitchen. It has a nice, scenic location but is a little bit of a walk to lectures, so if you don’t need added barriers to making your classes maybe this isn’t the one for you. Although it has single beds, it is close to the gym, so you win some you lose some.

Lakeside

I’ve got to be honest, I truly know nothing about this accommodation other than that it is as the name suggests, next to the lake. I have found out however it has en-suites, big bedrooms with double beds, with access to its own residence hub for socialising or working, so not a bad option. The only bad side is it is quite a walk to central campus.

Bluebell

Infamous for being the most expensive accommodation, Bluebell is right next to Rootes, but a far cry from the 23 person kitchens. With huge windows it’s full of natural light and has eight person kitchens, en-suites and double beds with a convenient central location.

Claycroft

Claycroft is the University of Warwick accommodation closest to Tesco, which is so convenient for your weekly shops. Whilst it isn’t necessarily ensuite, you only share a bathroom with one other person and a kitchen between eight, with single beds and not too far from central campus, but a bit further than others such as Tocil.

Arthur Vick and Jack Martin

Often dubbed JM or AV these residences go hand in hand. Literally, they’re right next to each other. Both ensuite and both with double beds and close proximity to campus they are a great option for accommodation. The only downside, in JM you have to move out over Easter and move back in for term three. I’m not sure why, I think they use the rooms for something, but I am told you get given a locked space in the room to put things and it is cheaper because of this.

Heronbank

Also next to the lake, Heronbank is en-suite, spacious and scenic. It does however have single beds and a pretty long walk to campus so be aware of this if you’re considering it as your top University of Warwick accommodation.

Westwood

Often forgotten about because of the sheer distance from campus, Westwood has en-suites, with singular or shared kitchens with options to have single, small doubles or double bed rooms and they all have a TV. I have to say, that has definitely changed since I was a fresher but apparently Westwood is a pretty nice accommodation to be in according to the prospectus.
