A student at the University of Liverpool was scarily summoned to court over an unpaid council tax bill for her flat in private accommodation – and she had no idea about it until it happened.
In a video posted to her TikTok account, the second year student issued a hilarious warning to anyone living in privately rented accommodation blocks in the city as she recounted her “legal troubles” and run in with Liverpool City Council.
Keira, who studies Biological Sciences at the University of Liverpool, explained to The Liverpool Tab that she had no idea she wasn’t already exempt from paying her council tax at her residence, despite registering her student status the year before.
@keira.leighhhh go check that council tax rn
“I don’t understand why they couldn’t carry it on because they knew my graduating year was 2026,” she said.
Terrifying stuff, right?
The video, captioned “go check that council tax rn” tells the story of a bill she received for £1,600 as a result of ignoring multiple letters sent by Liverpool City Council since August of 2024.
They demanded multiple payments from Keira despite her “never seeing the letters before”.
Thankfully in December, she checked her accommodation post box for the first time.
The latest letter she opened actually summoned her to a court hearing dated only two days away from the discovery of her missing council tax payments. Imagine the pure fear that would give you.
“Ignorance is bliss apparently in my life,” she joked in her TikTok video, which has racked up a staggering 312k views and 46.8k likes since she posted it last month.

In conversation with The Liverpool Tab, Keira explained that she had lived in private accommodation during her previous year at university, where her landlord organised all the council tax exemptions for her. She assumed this would continue throughout her academic career when she moved into her current studio.
Oh boy, was she wrong.
“Prior to moving into the studio I had filled out so many documents that it was hard to keep track of what I had [or] hadn’t signed myself, but the management would always tell me what was left to sign – another reason why council tax exemptions didn’t even cross my mind”.
Keira hilariously recognised her mistake of not checking her letterbox since her move in day.
“I would have assumed that for something as important as getting billed over £1k that I would have been contacted another way – not just by letters?
“Especially if the council was receiving no response to the letters they were sending. I never had missed calls from the council or emails, leading me to be completely oblivious of the fact I was being charged with the large amount of bills, as well as a court hearing that I had no idea about”.
She expressed her pure shock at being in “legal trouble” with Liverpool City Council.
“I think being summoned to court scared me the most because I had no idea what to do about it and at the time of me opening the letters, the court hearing was supposed to be in two days time.
“Immediately the next day I phoned the council from the number that was printed on the letter and they were really understanding and kind so I imagine this happens frequently. They just asked me to send over the council exemption form on the Liverpool Council website and told me I wouldn’t have to attend court- to my relief.
“I didn’t have to pay anything thankfully and I didn’t hear anything again so I assume that I don’t have any outstanding bills or court hearings anymore”.
Take this as your warning to double check all of your post – at least a court hearing would’ve made for a hilarious TikTok day in the life video.
