The controversial Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson fight was the most streamed sporting event ever, but why are Jake and Mike now suspended from boxing? The fight was controversial for a lot of reasons, including the two boxers’ age difference, Mike’s health status and Jake’s promising to knock Mike out. There’s a very simple reason as to why Mike and Jake have both been suspended from boxing by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

Why are Mike Tyson and Jake Paul suspended from boxing after the fight?

Mike and Jake were suspended following their eight-round boxing match in Texas on Friday, but it’s not due to any misconduct. Instead, it follows the rules set by Texas boxing managing bodies that require boxers to have a rest period based on how long the fight lasted. Because there were eight rounds, both fighters were handed a 24-day suspension to guarantee their physical recovery.

Mike Tyson’s previous health scare

Mike Tyson was already pushing himself when he stepped into the ring after retiring from professional boxing in 2005. Despite being twice Jake Paul’s age, 58 year old Mike held his own for the full eight rounds. Earlier this year, Mike experienced a huge medical emergency on a plane which meant he had to delay the fight with Jake to November from its original June date.

“Coming here from Miami on the plane, I went to the bathroom, and I threw up blood. Next thing I know I’m on the floor and I was defecating tar,” Tyson said during the Netflix stream. “So I came to the hospital, they said I had a big ulcer, two and a half inches, it was bleeding. All my friends were calling me like I’m dying.”

Tyson explaind that the injury and hospitalisation caused him to lose 26 pounds, which may have put him at a disadvantage during the fight. However, he still said he’d rather die in the ring than in a hospital bed.

Both fighters are now resting as per the regulations, and have no immediate fights scheduled for after. Jake told Netflix he plans to get back in the ring in 2025, but Mike Tyson has not confirmed whether he will return.
