We asked these old folk what they ate when they were at uni
‘We would all buy cans of kidney beans and mash them up’
If there isn’t a McCain oven chip on the grill, there is a Birds Eye chicken pastry bake in the microwave.
Is this a good start for a lifetime of cooking? After all, what is university for, if not challenge, experimentation, reward?
We students are in need of inspiration, so I took to the buzzing streets of Central London to meet some postgrads who bring the cray to the kitchen.
Annie

“We were a right lazy bunch.
“Sick of seeing piles of dirty plates so set a ‘eating with no cutlery/plates/bowls/cups challenge’. Instead of glasses we had to buy loads of jam and use the jars to put our drinks in instead of glasses.
“Seeing someone with a full fist in a marmalade jar became a regular occurrence for me”
John, Edinburgh Uni

“Probably a nice rabbit pie, a bit of spinach and in it.
“Then we would tuck into a pigeon pie, but one of the young lads in the group got food poisoning from that. So that was the end of that”
Jean and Michael, University of California

“I ate a heck of a lot of the coloured frosted stuff.
“Being from the US, there was this cereal called poppin’ pebbles. That raspberry kick a punch. That would be my lunch.
“Then there were the lucky charms. That’s be my dinner. I remember breaking out in spots the first term because of all that sugar”
Julie, Brighton Uni

“We would all buy cans of kidney beans and mash them up.
“Making kidney bean patte! It was real cheap, real yum. I was a vegan at the time so got all my protein from that!”
Greg, Aberystwyth Uni

“Pasta alla Vodka and gin penne pasta.
“After all, why shouldn’t a night out start at dinner?”
Ramish, Surrey Uni

“It’s all about the jelly.
“The jelly and ice cream. I just eat a lot of jelly and ice cream. They used to say, ‘give it some welly jelly ram’. Then, I advanced to spicy wraps, sweetcorn and chickpea”
The kitchen is your dance floor, the hob is your stage. Shake your hair, rattle your utensils. Cooking is the new clubbing. Go reckless, go wild: let’s bring student life to the kitchen.
