Madelyn Cline and Chase Stokes talk about filming Outer Banks since their breakup

It’s probably most people’s worst nightmare to think about breaking up with someone but then having to see them every day at work. Let alone your work involving having to pretend to be in love with your ex and kissing them all the time. Since their breakup, that’s the place Madelyn Cline and Chase Stokes have found themselves with filming Outer Banks.

The pair began dating in 2020, during filming for season one. In November 2021 they announced their breakup, just before they started production for season three. In new episodes of Outer Banks, John B and Sarah, played by Chase and Madelyn, are still very much together.

You’d expect this to be awkward to say the least, but the actors have said they’ve taken a very professional outlook on their situation, and their breakup hasn’t changed things on set.

“Mads and I have been working together now for 30 episodes, and we made a promise to each other before we even started dating that the work was always going to come first,” Chase told EW. “And that no matter what happens in our personal lives, and the ways that life sometimes takes you in different directions, that we’re always going to honour the work. That stayed 100 per cent truthful this season.”

Madelyn has also commented, and said she’s proud of how they’ve managed to work together. “We had a working relationship before we had a personal relationship, and our job from day one has always been to leave the show better than we found it,” she said. “I’m really, really happy and I’m very proud of the work this season, and I’m incredibly grateful for my co-stars and their professionalism and just how talented each and every one of them are.”

This year, Madelyn has also featured in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, and Chase described her as a “rockstar” and said he’s “still her biggest fan”.

“She’s an incredible person, a rockstar of an actress, and she’s having an incredible moment,” he said. “Regardless of now not being together in a personal relationship, I’m still always going to be one of her biggest fans, and I’m super, super proud of all of her accomplishments inside the show and outside the show.”
