Connor’s mom responds to claims he’s ‘an actor pretending to have autism’ after Love on the Spectrum
People actually questioned his diagnosis
When Love on the Spectrum introduced Connor Tomlinson, many viewers were drawn to his warmth, sincerity, and unique way of expressing himself.
But what should have been an outpouring of support turned sour when false and hurtful claims began circulating online, suggesting that Connor was an “actor pretending to have autism.”
The speculation quickly spread across social media, prompting his mother to step in and address the situation directly. In a measured but firm response, she said her piece on these unfounded accusations.
Connor’s mom addresses claims
After Connor’s season on Love on the Spectrum premiered, many people were captivated by his gentle honesty, optional British accent switch-ups, and very visible, very real autism-related traits. And yet, somewhere online, a narrative began that was deeply disrespectful to Connor and to the wider autistic community.
Speaking on the Sorry We’re Cyrus podcast, Lise said: “The show was done to preserve everybody’s dignity, which we love…”
“Some people, gosh, we’ve had a few comments on social media where people actually questioned his diagnosis, or things like that, or he’s an actor playing somebody on the spectrum.
“I think that people would be surprised if they saw Connor in his natural habitat, unedited… but they do see… just the growth and everything that he’s gone through is phenomenal from the show.”
Lise explained *that* moment when things got heated in season three
Moving on to a memorable moment from Love on the Spectrum, Lise recalled a time when things got a little heated in season three.
Connor wasn’t impressed when his mom set him up with a “blond,” and no disrespect to blond people, but it just wasn’t Connor’s thing.
He clarified why he wasn’t impressed, however, explaining how it was actually due to the fact that the lady he went on a date with “didn’t like pomeranians.”
“That was the dealbreaker,” added Nicci… before Connor added: “If you don’t like dogs, you’re not in my book.”
“Basically, he got upset with me, and that’s as tough as it gets for him,” added Connor’s mom, “that’s about as aggressive as he gets.”
She said he’s “gentle, kind, and empathetic,” but maybe people didn’t get to see that.
