Shelley opens up on the ‘nerve-racking’ reality of filming Love on the Spectrum with James
'I had never been behind a camera before'
Exclusive: Shelley sat down with Reality Shrine to talk about the stark reality of filming Love on the Spectrum, having appeared in a few minutes of season three as James’ new girlfriend. She spilled all the tea on how she always remembers there’s over one million watching.
She opened up about how a lot of people who watch the show would claim she “looks so awkward on camera” – and while she knows she “shouldn’t be reading into their words,” she actually agrees. Shelley said, “I don’t really like cameras, but it reflects what autism is like.”
“It’s like, ‘How do I act when cameras are looking at me?’ Because it’s like someone else is watching you, and you’ve got to remind yourself that it’s not just a camera, it’s about one million people or more, so what is going to be behind this camera?” Shelley added.
Shelley, who moved from Southampton, England, to Japan, and now America, continued: “Then you have to think about how they are all going to see you at this moment. And I think my mind just thinks too much about things that I don’t really need to think about so much.”
She admitted she feels some people get involved in their relationship, and said: “That’s what comes with being a public figure. James is well-liked, people like him and want to see him happy and I get it, but sometimes people are taking photos of you and uploading it.”
Shelley went on to say it “does get a bit overwhelming” but regardless of that, she’s willing to return for season four with James and film for Netflix again. She said: “If there’s anything you’re not completely comfortable with, you can just say, and the team are just nice.”
