Love Is Blind’s Madison shares how rare eye condition affects her vision in tell-all video
She says there's a 'good chance she's going to go blind'
Madison from Love Is Blind‘s season nine is speaking out about her rare eye condition and how it affects her vision. She has been advocating for vision support since she was first diagnosed at the age of 21, which is called RP (Retinitis Pigmentosa).
RP is an inherited eye condition where the light-sensitive cells in retina gradually degenerate, leading to progressive vision loss. This means Madison cannot see from the nose down when she’s in a low-lit place, but in bright environments, she has a “good field of vision.”
She’s filmed a video to reveal the condition “affects the rods and cones of her eyes” which makes it “harder for her eyes to intake light sensory.” Further peripherals are harder for Madison to see, and sees that in low-lit areas, she has a “hard time seeing peripherally.”
Madison also explained that, with her specific RP, she sees a filter over her vision, which looks like a television static. She does wear glasses to help sometimes, and is now “hopeful she’ll never need a white cane” but added that it is a possibility for the future.
She said, “So if you meet in a bar and you want to shake my hand, just let me know that your hand is extended. Sometimes I won’t see it, although I’m pretty good at scanning. Sometimes people don’t even realise that I have difficulty seeing them.”
Audio cues are also really helpful for Madison, she explained, and says there’s a good chance she’s going to become fully blind. She said that Love Is Blind is really important to her because it “simulates what her life could look like when she loses her vision.”
She now wants to find the correct person who is “empathetic and understanding,” working closely as an ambassador and vice president with Fight Blindness charity for the last two years. Madison helped raise $590,000 after leading the charity’s biggest golf event!
