‘Disgusting’: The Love on the Spectrum cast react to RFK Jr’s disgraceful autism comments
RFK Jr claimed those with autism will 'never hold a job' amongst other shocking claims
The US health secretary, RFK Jr, has come under huge backlash for his shocking comments about those with autism during a press conference on Wednesday.
He claimed that those who have autism “will never pay taxes, they’ll never hold a job, they’ll never play baseball, they’ll never write a poem, they’ll never go on a date.”
During a new roundtable interview on Sunday, he compared autism to being worse than the COVID pandemic.
He claimed: “Autism affects children and affects them at the beginning of their lives, the beginning of their productivity. It dwarfs the COVID epidemic and the impacts on our country because COVID killed old people.”
He added: “It’s absolutely debilitating for them, their families, their communities.”
However, the cast of Love on the Spectrum has reacted to his shocking comments about those with autism, calling RFK Jr out for his “disgusting” comments.
Dani slammed the health secretary for his ‘disgusting’ comments towards those with autism
Dani told NewsNation that she was “disgusted” with his comments and claimed that his generalising statements were “completely false.”
She explained: “Autistic people have the same hopes, dreams and yes, the same awkward dating moments as anyone else.
“To generalise and say none of us can work, date or contribute to society, is completely false. I have a job. I do pay taxes. I’ve dated. I have a master’s degree.”
RFK has vowed to get to the bottom of why cases of autism have been increasing, however, Dani explained this approach implies that having autism is “wrong.”
She explained: “Wanting to cure autism implies that our way of being is wrong, and it isn’t. We don’t need to be fixed. We need to be supported. But the answer isn’t erasing autism, it’s building a more inclusive world for all of us.”
James admitted to finding his claims ‘highly offensive’
James also spoke out about the claims about autism that RFK Jr made, calling him out for being “highly offensive” with his comments.
He explained: “Recently, Robert F. Kennedy jr. made several comments about people who have autism or similar conditions that I found to be very offensive, so I would like to state that autism is merely a different way of thinking; it is not a disease or disorder, and people who have autism can certainly function interdependently, just as can people who are neurotypical.”
He continued: “I admit that I had difficulty with social skills when I was younger, but my parents, my teachers, and others assisted me, and I am very grateful for that assistance, as they helped me to reach the point at which I am, today; I have a permanent job, I can drive a vehicle without issues, and I even have a serious romantic relationship!
“I do still live with my parents, but that is due to factors that are beyond my control, and I am certainly searching for my own house, as well.
James added: “I hope that everyone here finds my words to be inspirational, and that everyone remembers the great progress that society has made in the past several decades, so we should continue to make progress, and not allow the progress that we have made to be lost, so I thank everyone for watching this video.”
