Khloé Kardashian’s road to motherhood has been a long and stressful one, with the reality TV star forced to contend with a cheating partner, health issues, and the prying eyes of the public.
Khloé Kardashian is the middle child of Kris Jenner’s celebrity litter, with Kim and Kourtney Kardashian proceeding her, and Kylie and Kendall Jenner coming after.
Though Khloé‘s life has been littered with hardships, including a devastating battle with her weight, the businesswoman and influencer has continued to soldier on through projects like The Kardashians.
When she met basketball bro Tristan Thompson in the summer of 2016, things seemed to finally be looking up for the star’s love life. Unfortunately, as we all know, that relationship ended in flames after numerous cheating allegations and illegitimate children.
Jump in our time machine as we take you back through Khloé Kardashian’s surrogacy journey, from the moment she decided to the birth of her son.
Tristan and Khloé Kardashian had a rocky relationship
After being set up with Tristan Thompson in the summer of 2016, Khloé Kardashian wasted no time in packing on the PDA and cementing him in her very Kardashian dating history.
Despite the drama being present from the onset, with Tristan’s ex Jordan Craig claiming he ditched her and their son for the social media mogul, both parties seemed content in their relationship.
After a year of dating, December 2017 marked the month that Khloé confirmed that she was expecting her first child with Tristan.
“My greatest dream realized! We are having a baby! I had been waiting and wondering but God had a plan all along. He knew what He was doing,” she penned on Instagram at the time. “I simply had to trust in Him and be patient. I still at times can’t believe that our love created life! Tristan, thank you for loving me the way that you do!”
Incoming: cheating scandal number one
In April 2018, as Khloe gave birth to their daughter, Tristan’s first cheating allegation was published by TMZ. The gossip site had acquired video and images of Tristan kissing other women in both New York City and Washington, D.C.
Khloé was a loving mother from the outset, but that didn’t detract from her man’s indiscretions, something fans continued to remind her of until she blew up on social media.
“You have no knowledge of what goes on in our household or the enormous rebuilding this takes to even coexist. I’m proud of my strength. I appreciate your opinion and I hope you hold that same opinion to everyone else who has stayed in situations,” she said.
Khloé first considered IVF in April 2020
After several other scandals, including Tristan Thompson kissing a friend of Kylie Jenner’s, the couple seemed to be in a stable position.
During an episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians in April 2020, fans watched as Khloé talked about using Tristan as a sperm donor for her future kids.
“I might get some embryos and get a sibling. I might need to borrow some sperm or get some from you. We’ll figure that out later. That’s a whole other episode,” Khloé said.
The process was fully underway by the next episode, as Koko told her sisters that she had already begun hormone injections. The strangeness of the situation was not lost on the fashion designer, with Khloe telling Kendall, “But it’s weird, because Tristan and I, we’re not together.”
The Good American co-founder was unable to carry the child herself due to a stark warning from her doctor, who said there was almost an 80% that she’d miscarry.
The surrogacy process was difficult
Pregnancy experiences differ greatly, and those using a surrogate often experience a version of events most of us can’t begin to understand. The 41-year-old was no different, with the star becoming a recluse during the period.
By mid-2021, Khloé and Tristan had gotten back together, become engaged, and split up all over again after further leaks pointed to Tristan snuggling with three women at a party in Los Angeles. As you might have already predicted, they tried the relationship again in October.
By November 2021, Khloe and Tristan’s surrogate had been implemented with the embryo, though they wouldn’t announce the pregnancy until the following year. It’s a good thing they did, too, as just a month later it came out that Tristan had fathered another illegitimate child.
Baby boy on board
On July 28, 2022, Khloé and Tristan’s surrogate gave birth to a baby boy prematurely at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California.
“I’ve been on the fence about having Tristan come to the hospital or not,” she said during an episode of The Kardashians. “But Tristan wants to be here, so I just figured why not let him come? I’ll never get this moment back.”
The fashion designer also recalled having a difficult experience with the surrogacy process, telling Kim: “I felt really guilty that this woman just had my baby and I take the baby and go to another room and you’re separated. You’re just like, ‘OK, we’re having a baby and this is my son and I’m taking him home with me.’ It felt like such a transactional experience.”
Khloé Kardashian’s secrecy surrounding her second child had fans on the edge of their seats as they attempted to guess his name. The hunt for the name only grew more intense after Khloe revealed it started with T.
A year after her son’s birth, Khloé revealed his name was Tatum during an episode of The Kardashians, though she did have trouble landing on it.
