At the time, Lewis was the runaway favourite to win the competition, with odds far greater than anyone else in the house.
However, despite a live eviction that later saw Tomasz Wania evicted, Lewis was also sent packing with no other explanation than that he was kicked out due to “unacceptable language”.
Although what Lewis said never aired on the Channel 5 series, we can now officially reveal what it was that cost the 27-year-old a potential £100,000 in prize money.
The “Unacceptable Language” Law
Big Brother U.K has had a long-standing policy regarding “unaccapetable language”.
Although it is up to the discretion of the production company, Big Brother rules clearly state that housemates would be evicted should they:
Behave in a way that could cause serious offence to either their fellow housemates or members of the viewing public (including serious offence based on the grounds of age, disability, gender, race, religion, beliefs or sexual orientation).
Why Was Lewis Removed From Big Brother?
Lewis used “unaccapetable language” during a conversation with fellow housemate Cameron Cole.
Initially, reports surfaced explaining that the pair were discussing their time on the show when Lewis made a reference to Auschwitz.
At the time, Lewis said in the Diary Room:
I’m not ashamed because I didn’t try to offend anyone – it was a slip of the tongue. My misuse of certain phrases and certain words has blown up in my face.
It was thought that Lewis had simply mentioned the word “Auschwitz” during the conversation, which caused an uproar on social media as people accused Big Brother of overreacting.
However, it turns out that it was a whole dialogue and not just a simple slip of the tongue.
What Did Lewis Flanagan Say?
Lewis set the record straight in an interview with The Sun Online, explaining that he was doing an impression of Hitler to Cameron Cole, where he added: “kill the Jews”.
Lewis said:
I was talking to Cameron about getting him some outfits and I said the word ‘Auschwitz’ instead of outfits by mistake.
It was a slip of the tongue and and then I tried to mock Hitler and did an impression of him saying ‘kill the Jews’.
Lewis Apologizes
Back at his home in Manchester, Lewis has taken to Instagram to thank fans for voicing their support.
The 27-year-old also took the time to reiterate that he is not anti-Semitic and that although he understands his comments were incredibly offensive, they simply “came out the wrong way”.
Lewis said:
After I said it, I realised I shouldn’t have because it could be seen as offensive. I’m not ashamed as it really was just meant to be an impression of Hitler and it has cost me. I lost out on the best part of my experience.
I apologise wholeheartedly and want to move on with my life. I’m trying my best to be a good man. I went in to Big Brother to be myself and part of that is I’m not perfect – I’m far from it and I made a mistake and that’s all it was and all I can do now is apologise.”
