Selena Gomez opens up about health struggles and impact on her relationship with Benny Blanco

Selena Gomez has given a very rare insight into her health, and how it impacts her personal life and in particular her relationship with husband, Benny Blanco. 

While speaking at the Fast Company Innovation Festival in New York City, as per MailOnline, she spoke about her want to start a family in the future, and how she can’t carry children of her own. She said that she and Benny Blanco, who married nearly a year ago, will “eventually” have children.

During the talk, she was asked about parts of her life she’s most proud of. Selena replied: “I think what makes me proud is knowing that we’re truly making a difference… I think there’s a bunch of stigma around everything, and I have a 13-year-old sister who means the world to me, and eventually I’ll have my own children, and this is something that I don’t want to be taboo.”

She has previously said she cannot carry her own children, and at the New York Festival added: “I don’t mind if people think it’s ‘out there,’ but I love what we have accomplished and I think we’ll just continue to grow in that manner and hopefully continue to do great things.”

It was in a previous interview with Vanity Fair that Selena said she can’t carry children of her own due to medical issues. “I haven’t ever said this, but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children,” she told the publication. “I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while.”

She admitted that this maybe wasn’t how she pictured going into motherhood, but she called other ways to welcome children “a blessing”.

Selena added: “It’s not necessarily the way I envisioned it. I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone. I’m in a much better place with that. I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me.

“It made me really thankful for the other outlets for people who are dying to be moms. I’m one of those people. I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different.”

Selena said that no mater how she and Benny welcome children, the child will always feel like their own. “At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby,” she said. 

Back in 2017, Selena was seriously ill from lupus, an autoimmune disease that damaged her kidneys. Francia Raisa, who she had met over a decade earlier at a charity event, donated her one of her kidneys.

Since then, Selena has been very open about her health. She has stepped away from music in the past, openly citing a need to protect her mental health, and has always said that Benny has been her rock through everything.
