Awkward resurfaced Lily Allen and David Harbour video shows ‘hidden cracks’ in marriage

It’s a hard watch

A painfully awkward resurfaced video of Lily Allen and David Harbour has reappeared online, and it’s got everyone convinced there were cracks in their marriage long before their split went public.

The couple called it quits in December, after reports emerged that David had been involved in an affair with a costume designer. Lily, never one to stay silent, seemed to lay everything bare in her new album West End Girl, which includes some pretty savage references to alleged infidelity and resentment.

Lily said that the album isn’t necessarily gospel truth, because she “wasn’t sure what was real, and what was in my head”.

Now, a 2022 red carpet interview is doing the rounds again — and honestly, it’s not aged well. In the clip, filmed at the Olivier Awards, Lily is mid-answer when David interrupts, clearly thinking the question was meant for him.

When it becomes obvious it wasn’t, he awkwardly steps back as Lily continues: “It’s not my usual industry or crowd, but I’m just really honoured and happy and humble to be here. To be nominated is beyond anything I expected.”

When the interviewer turned to David and asked if it was his first time at the awards, he replied: “This is. I’ve done about a hundred thousand plays, never been recognised.”

He then turned to Lily and, through gritted teeth, added a short: “Congratulations.”

Yeah. Not great.

The moment has been circulating again on X, after someone reposted it following the release of Lily’s new record. And it’s not the only thing that’s resurfaced. A message David once sent Lily after her West End debut in 2:22 A Ghost Story has also come back to haunt him.

She’d shared a photo of the flowers he’d sent her at the time — along with a note that read: “My ambitious wife. These are bad luck flowers, because if you get reviewed well in this play you’ll get all kinds of awards and I’ll be miserable. Your loving husband.”

At first glance, it reads like sarcasm. But now, it hits very differently. People have pointed out how the tone of that message mirrors the themes in Lily’s new song West End Girl, where she sings about a partner whose mood “changed” after she landed a lead role in a play.

The lyrics describe a relationship slowly unravelling as one person’s success starts to grate on the other, something that feels eerily close to home given what we now know. The resurfaced clips and messages between David Harbour and Lily Allen show that their marriage was under strain for years before they separated.

As one X comment put it: “Not even in hindsight. This note was a red flag from day one.”
