How close was David Harbour to Lily Allen’s kids, and what might be his role after their split

He never wanted kids before meeting Lily’s daughters

David Harbour has previously spoken about his experience as a stepfather to Lily Allen’s kids, and now she has hinted at what his role might be in their lives following their split.

The Stranger Things star became a stepdad to Lily Allen’s kids, Ethel, 13, and Marnie, 12, when he married her in 2020. Before meeting her, he had always planned to live a child-free life. In the podcast, Miss Me?, he admitted that he “never wanted kids” and had even imagined the Harbour family line would end with him.

‘Almost immediately, I fell in love with them’

David Harbour recalled that meeting the girls for the first time was emotional. He remembered feeling nervous and unsure during their early breakfasts together. “I was scared,” he said, “but almost immediately, I fell in love with them. It was that feeling people talk about when they have kids, you want to take care of them, give them anything.”

He also shared a funny memory: When he first met Marnie, she thought he was their new assistant. “And in a way, I kind of am,” he laughed. Despite that initial confusion, he quickly became involved in their lives, attending events, taking them to concerts, and supporting them in day-to-day moments.

Over the years, David described growing into his role as a caring and hands-on stepfather. He helped with everyday tasks like packing luggage for summer camp and driving them long distances when Lily’s plans changed. He also shared glimpses of his life with the girls on social media, showing how close they had become.

David called the experience “the most surprising and enjoyable thing” he had ever done. “There was just an immediate sort of love for them that was so unique,” he said. “They were innocent, little faces looking up at me, and that really pushed me over the edge. I realised this is a family, a pre-made family, and I want to be there for them.”

So, after the split, will he continue to be in their lives?

Following their separation, questions have arisen about David’s future role in the girls’ lives. In a recent interview with Vogue, Lily said that the details of co-parenting with David are best confirmed by him. “You’ll have to ask him,” she said.

She also noted that her daughters had a positive experience living in America and expressed compassion for David. “My kids had an amazing experience living in America for five years, and I have a lot of compassion for my ex-husband. I think we all suffer,” she said.

Although their marriage has ended, and they are selling their NYC home, it appears that David’s bond with Ethel and Marnie will likely continue in some form.
