Prosecutor involved in the Kendra Licari case finally speaks out about the Netflix doc
He revealed what the viewers didn’t see
The prosecutor in the Kendra Licari case has spoken out publicly for the first time about the Netflix doc, Unknown Number: The High School Catfish.
The doc follows the shocking story of Kendra Licari, the mother who sent thousands of abusive and threatening messages to her own daughter, Lauryn, and Lauryn’s then-boyfriend, Owen, over nearly two years.
At first, suspicion fell on Lauryn’s friends because the texts mentioned her nickname, “Lo,” and included personal details only someone close would know. But when the FBI became involved, investigators traced the messages back to Kendra herself.
She was arrested and later sentenced to between 19 months and five years in prison. In the end, she served just over a year before being released.

In an interview with NewsNation’s Banfield, Isabella County prosecutor David Barberi revealed what viewers didn’t see in the doc. He said, “The documentary did a good job of showing how graphic the text messages were. But what it didn’t really show was the impact on the families. It’s hard to put that across in just 90 minutes, when the harassment went on for more than a year. These families were living with constant trauma and abuse through those messages.”

He also weighed in on whether there was ever a clear reason why Kendra did it. He explained, “That’s the million-dollar question. I don’t think anyone will ever really know. The theory we’ve always leaned on is that when her daughter was being hurt, she turned to Kendra for comfort. And over time, Kendra started feeding off that. But we could never identify a true motive.”
On whether Kendra ever apologised for what she did, the prosecutor said, “She did apologise in court and tried to give some kind of explanation for her behaviour. But for many of the families involved, it fell far short of making up for the damage she caused.”
