Wait! There’s actually a Lisa Rinna film inspired by the Kendra Licari catfish case

It was released last year

So, if you’ve been following the Netflix documentary Unknown Number: The High School Catfish, you might be surprised to know that Lifetime also made a movie, starring Lisa Rinna, about the same real-life case, titled Mommy Meanest.

The film premiered on May 11, 2024, and is inspired by the events surrounding the catfish mum, Kendra Licari. The movie isn’t a direct adaptation of the catfish case, but it draws heavily on the real-life story.

So, what’s the film about?

In Mommy Meanest, Lisa Rinna portrays Madelyn, a mother who becomes consumed with jealousy and insecurity as her daughter, Mia, prepares to leave for college. Madelyn begins sending Mia anonymous, degrading messages in an attempt to sabotage her daughter’s independence and maintain control over her. As the cyberbullying escalates, Mia starts to suspect that the perpetrator might be closer than she realises.

The film is heavily inspired by the real-life case of Kendra Licari. She used a fake identity to harass her daughter, Lauryn, and her daughter’s boyfriend, Owen, over a period of nearly two years. Kendra’s actions were described as a form of “cyber Munchausen’s syndrome,” where she made her daughter feel bad to elicit sympathy and attention. She also used Lauryn’s nickname, Lo, and other personal information, which led investigators to believe that the messages were sent by her close friends.

The case shocked the small town of Beal City, Michigan, and ultimately led to Kendra’s arrest, conviction, and prison sentence.

Well, who else is in the cast?

Lisa Rinna plays the main character, Madelyn, and also served as the film’s executive producer. Briana Skye plays Mia, Madelyn’s daughter. Delilah Hamlin, Lisa Rinna’s real-life daughter, appears as Summer, Mia’s friend. This marked the first time the mother-daughter duo have shared the screen together.
