Six creepy details about Kendra’s ‘obsession’ with Owen the catfish doc missed out

Netflix’s shocking documentary Unknown Number: The High School Catfish has gripped the world, but the film leaves out some creepy details about Kendra’s alleged “obsession” with Owen. 

It follows the true story of a teen girl from Michigan called Lauren Licari and her boyfriend at the time, Owen McKenny, who face constant harassment from an unknown number. Police investigate the months of persistent text messages and make the shocking discovery that it was her own mother Kendra sending the texts all along.

Nobody really knows why she did it, but one of the theories is that Kendra was obsessed with her daughter’s boyfriend. The documentary briefly touches on this idea, but misses out some strange parts.

Kendra would always join Lauryn and Owen’s dates

According to an investigation by The Cut, Owen’s mum Jill claimed Kendra would always “come along” on he and Lauryn’s dates when they first got together. At every opportunity, she’d “ask them to wrap their arms around each other for a photo,” which Lauryn would turn into presents for Owen including a personalised phone case.

She signed up to be Owen’s track coach

The catfish mum also reportedly signed up to coach Owen’s track team at school in eighth grade. She would regularly watch his matches and once drove Lauryn “three hours across Michigan” to watch one of his championship games.

The mum would often text Owen from Lauryn’s phone

A student told The Cut they caught Kendra going through Lauren’s phone, looking at her texts from Owen and replying to them. One of them allegedly said: “I love you”.

The investigation also claims Kendra would often refer to herself as Owen’s “second mum” and spoke as if he and Lauryn were going to be together forever, even though they were only 13 at the time.

She wanted to turn his tournament into a holiday

According to Jill, the catifsh mum once suggested turning one of Owen’s sports tournaments in Florida into a joint family holiday, and she had to “gently say no”.

Kendra was constantly talking about Owen’s love life

Even after Owen and Lauryn broke up, Kendra was obsessed with his love life and would often ask his mum who he was dating, Jill claimed. She would ask if he was getting together with Khloe Wilson too.
